Coyote, Lamar Valley [ Sizes: Orig | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Coyote, Lamar Valley
Before the wolf reintroduction became such a success, coyotes were the top dogs, literally and figuratively, in the Lamar Valley and much of the rest of Yellowstone. Now their numbers are fewer and they have had to find new hunting grounds.

This coyote was "snow diving," hunting rodents by listening for them moving beneath the snow and then pouncing, snout-first, after them. Coyotes and foxes alike put on spectacular leaping shows as they hunt for their prey amid the winter snows.

Thank you. It's probably not fun watching them pounce on you, though!
