Clark's Nutcracker [ Sizes: Orig | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Clark's Nutcracker
A Clark's Nutcracker sitting on an ice coated tree at Bear Lake, trailhead for many climbs in Rocky Mountain National Park.
The bird was very cooperative, waiting until I moved to position the sun directly behind him. He turned his head in profile, let me snap the picture, then flew off.

This is absolutely not fair! Cooperative birds! If I try a shot like this they wait until I have my camera out of its pocket, turned it on - and then fly away. Always! Same with butterflies.

Congratulations on this fabulous shot!

...from shots like this, will you still remember your old friends at SP?

Thanks, Sharon! I won't ever get rich and famous from this, not when I see all the great work out there (a lot of it here at SP!). I've had a few things published here and there, but would be exceptionally skinny if that was where the grocery money was coming from

But, the answer to your question is "YES!" I would throw an SP bash.

Thanks, man! The American Museum of Natural History used this on their holiday greeting card some yeras ago. It's been a favorite of mine, and I've never been in a situation where I could try to repeat it.

Thanks very much Lolli. I have returned to that place several times - the birds are usually there - and hoped to see this again, but so far it has turned out to be a once-only event.

Exceptional shot Nelson! How did you do it?

Thanks Dave. Well first I noticed the unusual conditions of the ice coated branches shining in backlight. The birds were coming and going and I hung out there for a few minutes until they got used to me. I saw which branches they landed on a lot, then positioned myself so I could move to where I had the low sun directly behind a bird. As noted above this bird was cooperative and turned his head in profile - the 'decisive moment' - and I was able to squeeze off a couple of shots before he flew.

jazamoo, thanx very much for your comments on my photos. It's often about the light, isn't it. I've thought that getting a good photo is about being in the right place at the right time, but also about realizing it's the right place and time. Sometimes I'll work hard to be there then, and sometimes it just happens, like this one.

Thanks again, much appreciated.
