Glad you managed to finally get up Deception
Creek. Looks like a large amount of snow still
remaining! Looks like Deception Basin would be
a beautiful place to set up camp!

Thanks Larry. Yeah, there is quite the amount of snow this year. The basin is amazing and made for the perfect camp for two nights, but I did not ascend the creek to get there. Rather, I descended into the valley via Royal Basin.

Got it - sounds like you came in from the
Dungeness River side. The Dosewallips approach
must be extremely long, beginning at Camp
Muscott!! What a WOW place to camp! Any bears??

Starting from Camp Muscott would be nice but the hike is extended by 5.5 miles on account of the Dosewallips road washout from years back. No bear encountered in the basin though I wouldn't have been suprised; did see marmots and a fox running across a talus slope which was nice.

besides, who wants to bushwack up Deception Creek with a full pack? Having just camped there recently (At Deception Creek) it's more of a river than the Dosewallips is, and the water is much colder. It would be a killer to get up Mystery from that side; almost 6,000 feet of elevation gain in only a few short miles.....ouch!

I once made an attempt at an ascension of Deception Creek that didn't quite work out. If there is a way-trail up the creek I was not able to discern it...at all. A traverse of Del Monte Ridge sounds more enticing.
