Future mountaineer saint? Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati descending Mon Viso, 1923. Bl. Pier Giorgio is one step away from being declared a saint by the Catholic Church. That "one step" is a big one, and Pier Giorgio may never quite achieve official sainthood status.

Voted 10/10 | "Concerning that hemp accordingly the Scythians, whenever they take hold of its seed, slip under the cloths and thereafter throw the seed on the glowing stones and it is burnt, when it is thrown on, and furnishes from itself so great a vapor that not even a single Greek vapour-bath could surpass it. Then the Scythians are pleased by the vapour-bath and howl; that for them is in place of a bath; for indeed they wash not for themselves with water entirely their body"

Hasn't voted | Apparently, Blessed Pier Giorgio took up smoking after the example of his mom who smoked cigars. The funny thing is that I have seen versions of this same picture with the pipe removed—I guess that some think that holy people can’t smoke. | | Posted Mar 7, 2006 11:31 pm |
