Up the Couloir [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Up the Couloir
This image is of the Southwest Couloir on June 27th, 2009. As you can see, snow and ice still lay on the rocks that would normally be exposed later in the season. The snow conditions were good and climbing with ice axes and crampons was fairly easy. Depth is hard to judge in a photo, by the angle of the couloir was anywhere between 50-65% in some spots. In the fall, according to locals, there is a trail of switchbacks that ascends the couloir. The locals also call the couloir the "bowling alley"! Be careful for falling rocks!

This photo is the spring (with snow) view of splattski's photo of the couloir.
