Looking northwest from near the summit of Iron Mountain (May 22, 2004). The high point along the ridge doesn't have an official name, but it's unofficially known as Table Mountain and is a ranked 12er. There is an elevation drop of roughly 330 ft to the saddle between Table Iron and Iron Mountain.

Yup, it's a ranked 12er, with a colloquial name of "Table Iron". Nice shot.

Cool. How do you find out the rank and colloquial name of peaks like this?

Just a couple of weeks ago, I completed a huge project that I had been working on, on and off, for over a year. I calculated the prominence for all of Colorado's ranked and/or named 12ers (all 913 of them...) and also provided the parent peak, a la Gerry Roach, to assist in locating the peaks on a map. Consequently, I've become pretty familiar with a lot of the peak's names, and I have a spreadsheet at the ready when I want.

I'll be posting the results online as soon as I get off my ass and get around to formatting the data into an HTML table. I'll make a post to the Rockies board when I have it online.

In the interim, there's a full list of CO's 12ers on Roach's site. That's where I found pretty much all the colloquial names that I know of. "Table Iron" sounds like a name that Roach came up with himself, though I don't know for certain. He has a penchant (and a knack) for creating names inspired by an unnamed peak's appearance or associated with other geographical features in that peak's surroundings. In the case of "Table Iron", it seems that both of these qualities apply.
