Voted 10/10 | I had my hand broken on Mt. Whitney earlier this month so the name "Broken Hand Pass" caught my attention. Actually just a finger as it turned out but I can sympathize to whoever the pass was named for.
Nice series of pics. | | Posted Aug 26, 2004 8:22 pm |

Voted 10/10 | A rip-roaring contemporary of old Kit (Carson) was Indian agent Thomas FitzPatrick whose Indian name, Broken Hand, is remembered in 13,573-foot Broken Hand Peak......"

The Nez Perce Indians of Wyoming gave him this name after his gun exploded and he lost two fingers during the Battle of Pierre's Hole in 1832. The FitzPatrick Wilderness in the Wind River Range of Wyoming is named after him. | | Posted Aug 26, 2004 10:06 pm |

Hasn't voted | That's good info, Alan. I hadn't done any research yet on Broken Hand, and I thought it had something to do with the rock formations on the peak's northwest ridge. Some of them look very finger-like, so they selected an appropriate peak to memorialize him with. I appreciate the comments, Dean! | | Posted Aug 27, 2004 11:12 am |
