| The area south of the Lienz... | [ Sizes: Orig | Med | Small | Thumb ] |
The area south of the Lienz Dolomites was once famous for snakes. At least in one place they put up crosses against the animals. These crosses must have been effective but every now and then you encounter one. This one is the common viper, Vipera berus, the most common and poisonous snake in Europe. Sept 20th 2004

Hasn't voted | I have had a dicussion with MGS about it. I had already thought so but Judith voted against it. Mainly, because we had seen another (rather browner) one last year.
.
Well, rather we saw the tail end last year ;-)
Anyway the colours are much different but then I learned from MGS that they adapt to the surrounding colour...... | | Posted Oct 4, 2004 7:21 am |

Hasn't voted | It wasn' t a joke: my colleague told me that vipera aspis has golden eyes, then in your case it's vipera berus, also because the "a priori" probability that the vipera met in Dolomiti of Lienz belong to the species berus is of 99%.
By the way, when you meet a snake, usually do you fix it into the eyes? | | Posted Oct 4, 2004 1:38 pm |

Hasn't voted | It may seem as if I was real close and looked into its eyes but I used a zoom with magnification factor 8. The same which I do with the flower shots. | | Posted Oct 4, 2004 2:17 pm |
| rpc | That's pretty close! | |
Voted 10/10 | Hope this is the zoom :)

Hasn't voted | This was rather a small one - about one foot and a half. I was so close that it just started to raise its head getting interested. However, all the time it tried sliding away from me - which is what these little snakes usually do. | | Posted Apr 5, 2006 4:58 am |
