A lone donkey grazing on a steep cultivated mountain side in the borderlands of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. Turning my head180 degrees, excellent views of Pik Lenin could be seen.

It's a lovely photograph! The colours are so beautiful, and so different from the usual mountain sceneries.

	Hasn't voted	Thanks! I started to dig deep in my slide collection tonight and found this one from 2000. At a first glance, I wasn't sure if its clouds or higher hills in the top right corner. It's hills. A strange and very colorful area.

What exactly are the locals cultivating there? Could it possibly be a natural phenomenon--terracing caused by the melting of sculpted snow?

	Hasn't voted	Thanks for making me reflect on that. I think you're right. It doesn't look like man-made terraces. Sometimes I saw people working with spades up there on the hillsides, but I never walked up to check out what they were doing.

I like the shade of green. Think maybe the terraces are caused by critters as you see those terraces often where sheep, cattle free graze.

	Hasn't voted	I visited the area where the photo is shot this summer. I had a look at the those "terraces". I'm pretty sure now they're caused by the many domestic animals in the area. I asked a local guy about it, but I don't speak any Kyrgyz, he no English. Our knowledge in Russian was at a low level, but if I got him right he confirmed it was caused by the many animals walking and grazing on the slope.
