Route Climbed: Tombstone Pass TH to Iron Mtn. "Direct" Trail Date Climbed: December 6, 2003  Sucess!

A great, quick snowshoe peak. Initially intended to climb Black Butte on the east side of the pass but the weather actually looked worse on the east side. Doubled back and snowshoed up Iron Mtn. instead. The sun actually came out a few times during the day!!??!!

Route Climbed: all Date Climbed: October 14, 2003 and May 25, 2004  Sucess!

October, 2003 - It was getting late in the day so I cheated and took the easy way to the top. I had the whole mountain to myself. There were a couple very small patches of snow on the summit. almost immediately after i summited, the clouds cleared to show a beautiful view of the three snow covered sisters and mount washington. Eventually jefferson also popped out from the clouds. I also got to watch a helicopter down in the valley moving logs that was pretty neat. Much nicer views than my summit of tidbits mountain 2 hours before. got back to my truck just as the sun dissapeared behind the horizon.

May, 2004 - Parked at Tombstone Pass and hiked the trail through Cone Peak's meadows to the Iron Mountain Trail. Great views from Diamond Peak to Mount Hood. Still quite a bit of snow on the north and east slopes, as well as some fairly steep snow near the very top. I took the Iron Mountain trail across highway 20 and followed the old Santiam Wagon road back to my truck. IT is still too early for most wildflowers, but there were a ton of trilliums in the forested parts of the cone Peak trail.

Route Climbed: Cone Peak Trail Date Climbed: July 13, 2003  Sucess!

Needed to get in some exercise for bigger ones in the coming weeks so I buzzed down in the morning and ran up Cone Peak in about an hour and then hiked over to Iron Mountain. LOADS of people mostly due I would imagine to the spectacular wildflower displays this time of year. Some Earthwatch expedition was there with about 40 people studying all the rare plants. Three Sisters and Jefferson never came out of the clouds but Washington did and looks almost completely snow free now. Couldn't see 3FJ due to other mountains blocking the view.

God I hate I-5 in between Salem and Portland on Sunday evenings when all the weekend warriors and RV drivers return back to the city. I could have almost walked faster back.
