Union and JoveStarted along Highway 2 at the Smithbrook Parking Lot. Hiked up the road. After reaching the hairpin turn, left the road and went straight up the side of the mountain until hitting the ridge to Union. From there followed the ridge to Union and then over to Jove. There was a TON of snow up here. No existing tracks beyond part way up the road. The bushwhack up the side of the mountain was very tame. The ridge itself was a workout just trying to work over and around the countless snow drifts. Lots of big icy snow bombs falling off trees along the ridge when the sun hit it. The upper part of the ridge to Jove was a bit nasty with huge drifts and some shooting cracks down the sides of the mountain. Ended up with 360 views at the summit with a little bit of sun. Union was mostly clouded in.

Jove-ialNice afternoon adventure. Started at Nason Saddle, climbed Jove after Union, and then on to “North Jove” for a 3-peak day. Tons of mosquitoes on the way of Jove, and lots of bear scat along the way. Trip Report

From Rainy passHiked from Rainy Pass over Union Peak, lots of rewarding views for little effort. There are so many red-painted blazes between Union and Jove (some literally 2 feet apart) that it would be really hard to get lost. A good place to check out snow level/conditions in the surrounding areas.

Better Than UnionThis is a better destination than Union Peak, and it is unfortunate that the best way to reach it is via Union Peak. The ridge route between the two peaks is easier to follow than the the east ridge route of Union Peak. The summit views from Jove Peak are better than Union Peak, too. I am glad to get this peak out of the way, as 2x of Union is 2x too many.

Slogging JoveClimbed with Katie and John, cut a few switchbacks in Smithbrook to hit the notch on the Union ridge and then head down and around to Jove. a longer, more strenuous day than i had anticipated despite good snow conditions. poor route finding mostly to blame, the traverse from Union is definitely the best route.

Three summits, four hoursAscended Union Peak, dropped down to the saddle between Union and Jove, and then ascended Jove. Climbed back up Union on the way out. Could not have asked for better weather!
