| It snowed about a half of foot the night before I hiked it so it was a work out to get to the top. Once on the summit there wasn't even a view of Everest because of all the cloud cover, what a let down. Better luck next time I guess. ~ Jason Maehl | |

| Bring a torch/flashlight and be there for the sunset. One of the better ones I've ever experienced! A little chilly, but if you are even a little equipped, no problem to make the short decent in the dark in time for your nightly yak burger. | |

| EARTH DAY 1995- Incredibly beautiful & other than the lack of oxygen, this high point on the ridge between Gorak Shep and Pumori is not technically difficult (watch out for awesome wind gusts); however, the reward is worth every "o" starved step. It's worth the view looking "down" upon Everest Base Camp, and up to the S. Col and The Goddess. Take your time acclimatizing, as I was in great cardio-vas. shape, and I still got moderate AMS symptoms and had to cut short my planned trip to Base Camp. | |

| Really just a high altitude hike with some boulder hopping near the top. Very windy once we reached the summit ridge. The clear views of Everest, Lhotse, Pumori, Changtse and other Himalayan giants were quite spectacular. Steady stream of hikers on the trail although we managed to hit a 10 minute lull to have the top to ourselves. The skies looked ominous the day before, where we camped outside of Lobuche but only a brief dusting of snow overnight and beautiful clear day for the ascent and views. Good acclimitization for my ascent of Imja Tse, four days later. | ||

| The day after I arrived at Gorak Shep, my trusted and faithful Sherpa and I ascended slopes to the west of the Khumbu Glacier and kept climbing until we got to the top of Kala Pataar where views of Mount Everest were obscured by clouds. But on our way down, the pyramid of Everest came into view and I took some shots that presently hang on the wall of my den. This was the culmination of a three-week trek that began and ended at the air strip in Lukla. During the approach march to Gorak Shep, the 1953 British base camp, I met a party of young Aussies who condescended to ask me why an old man such as I would want to trek to the 17,500-foot Everest Base Camp. Later I learned than they never got higher than 14,000-foot Periche before succumbing to altitude sickness. I spent two nights sleeping inside my one-man tent pitched inside the modest rock shelter at Gorak Shep (since then, so I read, a small hotel has been erected there). I ignored the credo to climb high and sleep low and subsequently paid for it. One the second morning there, I hiked further up the Khumbu Glacier and had to stop short of the Russian camp below the ice fall and sat on a rock amid the seracs on the Khumbu Glacier for three hours staring up at the ramparts of Nuptse. Finally my faithful Sherpa, who had slept a thousand feet lower down at Lobuche, appeared before me and led me meekly back down the glacier to the thicker air of Periche. Two days later I was back at Lukla, nervously awaiting a plane to fly me back to Kathmandu. A peg-legged Sherpa woman had prepared my meals over a wood fire inside the low-lying shelter. Her left leg had been amputated after it was crushed in a childhood accident. For two nights I was her only houseguest in the rock hovel. Two years later I encountered her on a crowded street in Kathmandu where she had found employment as a nanny. We spent a day together seeing the sights of Kathmandu and I took her to dinner. The next day she saw me off at the airport. She was a delightful person. | |

| I went in the morning and whiteout conditions didn't allow for much a view, but Kala Pataar is an almost "manditory" waypoint for anyone doing the Everest Base Camp trek. | |
