Climbed it via the Knife Edge route. Very windy but I pressed on anyways. Not for the faint of heart! Dramatic exposure. Loved it. Probably my favorite part of my hike to the Whites. Descended the Hunt/AT

The icing on the top of a great week of backpacking trip with my brother. Grey and blowing up top, but great memories!

Beginning of a 1500 mile AT journey going north to south. Would love to go back and finish the segment between Roanoke, Va. and Springer Mtn. someday. Cloudy, cool, breezy, on the summit.

Hiked up to Chimney Pond pre-dawn and then up Cathedral Ridge. Weather prevented us from crossing Knife's Edge. :( [with Pocket Rocks & Big Bird]

Two hours and fifty five minutes up the Hunt trail. Great class two and three action until I hit the tabletop. Nice weather for mid October even if it was numbingly cold and windy at the summit. Great views. Three hours down punctuated by seeing three through hikers finishing their AT hike with a dreadlocked girl following behind them at a more reasonable (I.e. fast as opposed to blazing fast) pace. My 37th state high point.

#1 10-2-13 Solo. Forecast for sunshine and NNW winds 10-20 mph held until Pamola Peak. From there it became 50' vis in thick moist clouds and winds 30 mph gusting to 40 mph. One upbeat aspect was that it was relatively warm, maybe 45 degrees. Met Tom (Abol trail) and one other at the weathered but still standing summit sign. Fall colors were breathtaking - when one could see them. On return I did the Knife-Edge again, holding on for dear life and descended below clouds at 4,000'. Exactly 7 hrs r/t. I'd love to do this route with clear skies and light winds. :)

Went up and down Abol slide trail. Gorgeous fall weather, and lots of nice foliage. Quite a bit easier than I was expecting, but still a great experience. Nice to see a lot of Appalachian trail hikers finishing. Anyway, state HP#22 in the books...

Up Dudley, across Knife Edge, down Saddle: an incredible, fantastic climb. Round trip around 9hrs including a nice break at Baxter Peak while talking to few guys completing their AT thru-hike. Dudley was wet and slippery making for a trully exhilarating climb. The weather was quite cloudy at the start and cleared up nicely for the Knife Edge traverse allowing for some excellent photographs. Certainly one of my (if not THE) favorite Northeast climbs to date. Also saw several moose throughout the park during a couple day hikes. I can't wait to visit the park again.

We went up Abol over knifes edge, and back down. A member of our group fell behind and got switched around at the top. I had to set off at 10 pm for a search and rescue hike to find her. Everyone got back safe, some lessons were learned, and all is forgiven.

huskertriguySaved it for a Rainy Day  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jun 11, 2013

Helon Knife Edge up;
Saddle Trail/Chimney Pond down.

It started raining one hour into my hike and did not let up for the rest of the day.

I really should not have been on the Knife Edge that day. Another hiker caught up to me and we adjusted our paces to stick together, as we were both mutually relieved someone else was dumb enough to be on the slick rocks in that rain and wind.

Only one other person I know of summited that day -- and he was a 69-year-old man who was very ill-outfitted and hypothermic, so getting to the ranger station down the extremely windy Saddle Trail to alert the ranger, hanging out and drying as the ranger got this guy warm and dry, and then walking him (and 60-70 pounds of his soaking wet gear, from jeans to flannel to asundry items) back took some time and pain.

Recommend descending the Saddle Trail, but those high winds are unlike any I have ever experienced anywhere in my life.

13 hours on the trail by the time I was done, 12 of which I spent soaked to the bone.

All in all a great day, beautiful mountain, and the weather helped ensure I had relative solitude. :-)

A very hard-earned SHP #32.

With only Abol and Hunt trails open, I was hesitant. I am not very experienced on technical leaning trails or scrambles. Morning was beautiful as I went up Abol. The weather turned nasty as I hit the summit and on the advice of the ranger I went down the Hunt trail. Not sure that was great advice but I made it five rain soaked hours later. Still had to hike two miles back to the car. I want to do it again when other tails are open. This was number 8.

Summited with the heartiest members of my BSA Venture Crew including my son. Weather was good, and we summited mid morning. We considered crossing Knife Edge but weather forecast wasn't great and we decided not to chance it. Fantastic hike!

Great setting, tons of route options. Had to bail on summit attempt (Waterfall Gully) due to unstable snow. Get it Next time!

Up Cathedral Ridge and down Knife's Edge.
Had more fun on this hike than any other. Weather was good, we had a day of rest in between, and the trails were more engaging; looking for the best way up or where to put your foot. Some adrenalin on knifes edge too. Especially when the fog started rolling in on one side of the edge.

We had amazing weather on our end of summer tour of Northeast highpoints. This was my 14th state HP. We took the Cathedral Ridge trail up, and at the summit saw a few guys completing their AT hike. Then we continued on to the Knife Edge and Helen Taylor. 70 degrees weather, and just so much fun up there! I'll go back to Maine again....
