Kaupulehu Crater

Kaupulehu Crater (map) is about three miles northwest as the crow flies from the summit of Hualalai. One passes it on the way to the summit if attempting the route from the end of Huehue Street (near the end of Kaloko Drive). Kaupulehu was the site of a relatively recent eruption on the mountain (in 1801). Puhia Pele, a fissure farther down the mountain, erupted at the same time. Puhia Pele ("Blown out by Pele") spattered its effluent and ruined the usability of the land just north of Keahole Airport. March 3, 2007.
