fantastic  Sucess!

randomly decided to climb it after doing a 5 day scooter trip to the region. Not super prepared for it and all it's rain, but still a fun hike. Gorgeous sunrise from the summit but couldn't see the lava down below because too much steam from the rain the night before

A homestay in Jambi  Sucess!

I flew over from KL for a 2 day visit to Sumatra. I figured it would be enough time for a quick jaunt up Gunung Kerinci. But I bought tickets several months back when I was healthy and the whole week before this trip I was fighting a slight head cold, dizziness and I had lost my voice. The volcano would offer some thin but fresh air, so I decided to have a go.

I caught a 18000Rp bus from the BIM (airport) to the travel agent, waited a few minutes for the transport to ready itself. I paid 90000Rp for a one-way fare to Sungai Penuh which passes right thru Kersil Tua, jump off point for Kerinci climbers.

Along the busride, I ended up chatting with a first-year uni student who was on her way home for holidays. She invited me to stay at her house. She said her brother could give me a ride back to Kersil Tua very early in the morning and we could have a nice meal together in her home town. So rather than off the bus at Kersil Tua, I took the bus all the way to the end and met the young perempuan's family. We had a not too spicy noodle dish. I have to say Padang food is spicy and I've been to Thailand and Sichuan.

Before arriving in Sungai Penuh, I was a bit anxious because it took over 1.5 hours after passing Kersil Tua. And we were at a lower elevation. I was feeling nervous that I wouldn't be able to reach the summit in time to catch the return bus to Padang the next day. However, everything worked out all right. I took a motorcycle the next morning back to Kersil Tua and through the tea and cabbage plantations. I felt my departure at 8am was a bit late, but I found myself on top a mere 4.5 hours later. I took a 1 hour summit nap, hoping the view deep into the caldera and to the North would clear off.

I started down the volcano by 1:30pm and arrived to the road at 4:15pm with plenty of time to wait for the direct bus to Padang. However, since the night bus is supposed to endure 9 hours, I figured I would catch an earlier ride and get to Padang in time for a late dinner and a good sleep before my flight next day.

As it turned out, I got a ride very easily but from the way the truck was being driven I thought surely it is loaded up with dynamite. Over any bumpy stretches I could have walked faster and there were lots of bumpy stretches. I tried catching a faster ride but I ended up sticking it out. We finally arrived in Padang at 3am. And I found out that the truck was hauling cabbage. I guess he didn't want to bruise a single leaf!

By the way, the sulfur is very strong but it only was noticeable the final 5m before reaching the rim.

Route Climbed: is there more than one? Date Climbed: some time in 1994  Sucess!

Great little trip, though our improvised shelter of leaves and plastic sheeting didn't do much to keep the torrential rain at bay. Cold noodles and clove cigarettes - lovely. Good pics on the mountain's main page by the way; brought it all flooding back to me.
