"Armenian Squeeze Job" Chute  Sucess!

Nice reconnoiter up Little Slide Canyon for skiing next season. Bri and I decided to forego the boring ass Class 2 trail and sandy ascent and lodged ourselves into a nice eastern chute that finished with a fun squeeze up an off-width hallway right to the southern ridge just moments away from the summit. Class 3-4 scrambling. Great summit views; couldn't find the register.

Beautiful Day for at Top Out  Sucess!

Camped in Little Slide Canyon at the base of the Incredible Hulk and took off exploring the next morning. Spotted this attractive peak from Ice Lake / Mule Pass area and found a class 3 / 4 route to the summit through a west facing notch. Roped up to tag the summit block, but that was probably overkill in hindsight. There looks like a 50 or so foot easy 5 or Sierra 4 route from the right side of the south face that would take you to the notch in a more fun and invigorating manner, but we weren't sure it would go until we could look down it after climbing from the other side. That will be my route if I'm ever up there again. Beautiful views on a sunny, smoke free day!

Up a Sketchy East Col  Sucess!

Fun day up the east side and down the northwest side. The east col was class 3 with some class 4 moves when mostly melted out. Not recommended. Eric and I chopped steps and scrambled in sketchy, steep, hard dirt.

Grudge over!  Sucess!

Enjoyable dayhike up Little Slide Canyon, past the Hulk, up the slopes northwest of Maltby, up Kettle, and back down past the Pass and Ice Lake to the Hulk and back out (with my dogs). It took 1.5 hours to hike out from where I had broken my ankle exactly one year prior (that had been a six hour crabwalk and hop out).

Epic Failure!

This was supposed to be my easy day, so with things being easy in mind, I allowed a large group of resting hikers to block my view of the easy turn off to Little Slide Canyon at the junction. I did some bushwhacking later to eventually regain the route.

Then, with things seeming easy, I mindlessly pulled a poorly balanced, mini-fridge size boulder onto my lower leg in Little Slide Canyon before reaching Maltby Lake. I quickly surmised that I had broken my ankle (x-ray later showed fractured lower tibia/medial maleollus requiring surgery). I wrapped my ankle tightly with duct tape and spent over six hours sliding, limping, crabwalking, and mostly hopping on my good leg back to Twin Lakes, using hiking poles to help as much as possible. A visit to the hospital in Mammoth and drive back to sleep at Twin Lakes put me in bed well after midnight. I never expected this to become a grudge mountain, nor a likely site for my first significant injury. At least I was relatively close to a trailhead when injured. I'll be back!
