Date Climbed: Sep 22, 2007
Hiked in from Big Cedar Creek, the eastern approach, which is considerably easier, with less elevation gain and less fighting through vegetation, than the western approach. Got a good look at three bighorn sheep on my descent, scrambling amid the scree just below treeline.

Climbed the peak on a Wilderness Monitoring trip with Brian B.from Friends of Nevada Wilderness and Kurt K.from the Sierra Club. Celebrated Kurt's 5oth B-day on top with German Choclate Cake. Views from the top are incredible. Please park your vehicle at the wilderness boundaries and keep the peak wild by using your legs.

Ever since I read Barry and Scotty's account of this peak, I have looked longingly at King Lear from various points around the Black Rock Desert. I finally had a free day and an excuse to be in the area on Oct. 15. The eastern approach hadn't been written about, so I hiked up from Big Cedar Creek. No bighorn sightings despite a solid hour glassing the cliffs in the area, but being able to look down on the Black Rock made up for everything.

Climbed with ScottyS, we found this peak while cruising around the Black Rock by air, and just because it looked cool, added it to our list. Our 1st attempt was an abort, we got three flat tires on the way there, and we were still about 12 miles from the trailhead. This time we got no flats, but no view either, the clouds sat on top of the peak all day. Oh well, it's still one of the coolest desert peaks I've climbed (or seen).

Climbed this beauty with bearbnz on a less-than-optimal day. Clouds and scattered precip kept things interesting above 7000', and the amount of snow at the top surprised the heck out of us.

A previous trip a month earlier resulted in 3 flat tires on the way to the trailhead --- something to think about when the nearest tire shop is 70 miles away....

Gain: 4900'

Ascent time: 2:58

Car-to-car: ~5:30
