Utah County Highpoint #25  Sucess!

Set up camp at Dollar Lake and hiked Gilbert the night before. Managed to summit Friday morning and get back to Gunsight Pass before the hail and thunder started.

Perfect timing  Sucess!

Backpacked through the area from Aug. 16 - 19 staying below Gunsight Pass the first night, at North Star Lake the second night, and finally at Hessie Lake the third night. Beautiful weather on summit day, then gradually went downhill over the next two days. Caught in several thunderstorms. Hiked out the last day in 40 degree weather with soaking rain below 11,000'. Snow was falling up higher.
Had fun watching a sheepherder successfully coax his dogs into rounding up sheep on the south side of Smith's Fork Pass.
We also spotted five moose on this trip.

Re: Perfect timing

Wow Chilkoot! You guys had much more of an adventure than we did! I guess that's what happens when you spend enough time in the Uintas. I've heard the weather there can be very unpredictable. We got hailed on a bit before reaching Gunsight on the way back, before we saw you, but didn't get to see any moose. I'm glad we've connected here on SP. Great to hear from you.

Standard Route  Sucess!

Hiked in and stayed at Dollar Lake. Reached summit the next day in a white out. This is one of the only mountains I've ever climbed while fully aware that I wouldn't have a view at the top. Unfortunately, I was passing through and knew I wouldn't be back for awhile. On the upside, I saw no one else from the time I left my truck until I got back. Also, I could see just fine until a little ways beyond Gunsight Pass so it was definitely worthwhile.

HP #16 in one day  Sucess!

My 82 year old Grandpa had done Kings in a day in 2002, and figured if he could do it, I better be able to. I talked my Uncle, who had hiked it with my grandpa, and my neighbor Dave McConnell into hiking it with me. We started at 4 am, and did the 27.5 miles roundtrip in 13 hours.

Kings in a Day  Sucess!

Splattski and I did a one day round trip from the Henrys Fork Campground starting with a 3:45 AM headlamp departure. We made it back to the car at 6:00 PM. JP added the summit of South Kings to his list while I napped on Kings and waited a little over an hour for him to make the round trip. We used the Gunsight approach and traversed the boulder field to Anderson Pass for both the ascent and descent. See Splattki's Trip Report here - Uintah Range, UT 2010

day hike  Sucess!

Hiked with the Eug. It took us 12 hours flat from car to car via the cutoff at Gunsight Pass, so no records were broken. It was surprisingly cold and windy in the morning. Met a guy on the summit who had just attained his 35th state high point. #9 for me.

Tourist route (Henry's Fork)  Sucess!

This was the busiest trail I've ever hiked; it reminded me of some of the popular routes in the Adirondacks, with less rock and mud. Early August seems to be very popular with organized groups, and we probably saw 100 Boy Scouts on the trail out on Monday.

I heard lots of complaints about the bugs, but I guess my youth in the NE makes me more tolerant. Or it is possible that I smelled so bad by then, that the bugs chose not to attack.

Took the mother in law  Sucess!

Summited at 11 - moseyed back to the car. Two days. We almost got flown back to the car because there were so many mosquitoes that they could have picked us up and carried us away.

Solo in 6.5 hrs  Sucess!

Added South Kings which I missed on my Kings-Emmons Ridge traverse due to an incoming storm. ~7.5 hours round trip all together. Could easily take another hour or so off of this with better route planning (didn't use Gunsight cutoff both ways), less gear (way warmer than I thought, quicker breaks to purify water, and a "race" pace. I do not run this distance solo, often and didn't want to jack myself, so I took it easy and enjoyed it, but after I finish the rest of the 13ers I see myself coming back and pushing it.

What took so long...  Sucess!

I have lived in the shadow of these peaks for 34 years. Finally able to reach my goal of standing atop Kings and Gilbert with my son. Part of a four day trip that included Dome and Gunsight. Its not the most difficult climb but this one was definitely worthwhile and meaningful.

Dad's Life List  Sucess!

My dad had always wanted to hike Kings Peak and this was his year. He isn't in the best shape but he made it. Unfortunately it had snowed the previous weekend and we were pushing snow to the summit but it made a wonderful trip.

Finally...  Sucess!

Finally got around to hiking this. Did it as a 3 day backpacking trip, camped at Dollar Lake. Perfect weather.

Various ascents  Sucess!

7/16/10: First peak enroute to Mount Emmons. A 37 mile 23.5 hour day.

9/5/09: First of a quad, which also included South Kings Peak, Gunsight Peak, and Gilbert Peak.

9/6/08: Solo day-hike on a clear but cold and windy Saturday. I was hoping to better my previous time, but about 8 inches of snow and fierce winds slowed me down greatly. Summited in 4:25 and round trip in 9:10.

9/3/06: Solo day-hike on a beautiful but crowded Labor Day weekend. Reached the summit in 3:35, and door-to-door from Henry's Fork trailhead in 7:02. Despite the crowded trail I lucked out and had the summit to myself.

3/25/06: Summited on a one day ski trip as part of the Wasatch Mountain Club's annual Kings Peak ski tour. Left the parking area at 5:15am and summited just after 2:00pm. Building storm clouds encouraged a rather quick summit stay. Arrived back at vehicle in the dark, just short of 8:00 pm. See the photo album for pictures.

7/29/00: A two-day hike from Henry's Fork. Camped about a mile above Dollar Lake then summited and hiked out on day 2. Descended the steep scree field from Anderson Pass instead of returning to Gunsight Pass - a nasty descent which I probably won't repeat.

Gunsight Pass traverse  Sucess!

Climbed with fellow CMCer, Jamie Norris. We hiked in via the Henry Fork Trail and camped past Dollar Lake. We started at 5:30am the next morning and took the shortcut traverse from Gunsight Pass over to Anderson Pass. Four storms dumped rain/snow/hail on us throughout the day. Fortunately they were not violent storms but we did have to hunker down a couple of times and wait for them to pass. It took us 9 1/2 hours RT. This is my 36th state HP.

Solitude in the Uintas

Camped at Dollar Lake. Summit day winds were 20-30 sustained gusting to well over 40mph.. cut over to Anderson Pass from Gunsight Pass. Stayed really high and went up over backside of Byrd to Anderson. a couple class 3 and 4 moves along the way. Descended via Toilet Bowl..

First Peak I Ever Climbed  Sucess!

This is the first real peak I ever climbed as part of a solo backpacking trip when I was 16. I grew hiking in the Uintas and learned to love the outdoors here.
