Incredible Shot!

For "turning out not as well as you hoped" this turned out amazing! The lava is well lit, the foreground is dark but still good looking, and the sky has a decent lighting. All in all this is a great shot!

I think you misunderstood the caption. This photo was actually taken by Iyan, the person who took us there in a boat. Unfortunately, my night photos didn't turn out (though the day photos turned out great).
