Climbed via Ellingwood Ridge and descended the standard route. A long day, but very fun route.

Summit healed all pain
After failing the year before on Mount of the Holy Cross I was back to Colorado to claim my first 14er. La Plata NW Ridge route was it. I will never be able to forget the feeling of accomplishment I had when I finally reached the true summit. Words can not describe how beautiful it was. It sparked something inside me that led me up Huron Peak, my 2nd 14er, two days later.

NW ridge winter ascent
Enjoyed a superb winter day on La Plata. Followed the trail until it started heading up La Plata Gulch, then made a beeline to the ridge to avoid avy terrain. The crux is a headwall that goes at class 2+ if you stay to climber's right. Snow was ~ 3 ft deep in the trees, which was not as bad as expected. Amazing views of Ellingwood Ridge in winter.

Standard route
Solo ascent, solo summit. Lost the trail on the way up due to snow, but rock hopped and wallowed in the snow drifts all the way to the top. Gorgeous day, cold wind!

This was an awesome route. Took me around 9 hours car to car. We came down the standard route.

SW Ridge
Pretty hike. Enjoyed the company of a friendly woman from Evergreen named Nancy on the way down.
I lead nine amazing OB students up this mountain. The weather was ideal and there was abundant wildlife – marmots, pikas, and ptarmigans. We had a spectacular journey.

North Face
Great snow route, tons of snow up there right now. I hiked the nw ridge route to the ridge line, then dropped into the bowl and traversed to the couloirs.

Route Climbed: SW RidgeAlone on this route the entire day, which was surprising on a 14'er. I guess people think there is only one way up...
