Lady of the snows (<i>Pulsatilla vernalis</i>)

Lady of the snows (Pulsatilla vernalis)

The name was quite apt, for I encountered these flowers on the edge of the snow. It was close to Lago Sruer (2330m), high up in Vallone del Vannino. The lake itself was still partly covered with ice and snow. Not enough to walk across, but it was a clear illustration of the unusual conditions for the time of the year. After figuring out which flower I had photographed, I looked it up in wikipedia and learned that this plant actually has several English names. Another one is "Spring pasque flower". I like "Lady of the snows" better!
