Larry Canyon  Sucess!

April 13-14 2024

On Day 1 we started from Larry Point and found our way to the hidden route in that I found back in March 2000. It was more difficult than I remembered though so we retreated and hiked across the slickrock on the rim down canyon until we found a bighorn sheep trail in. This was a long route, but had much less exposure.

After reaching the bottom of the canyon we headed down and completed the lower technical section of Larry Canyon. It was wetter than expected and I should have brought dry bags since everything got wet.

We completed the three rappels and challenging section of the canyon (which was very beautiful) before finding a nice sandy campsite with some rocks to spread everything out in. There was a nice spring nearby too and it was a great campsite. Everything was almost dry by the time we went to bed.

On Day 2 and in the morning we packed up camp and headed down Larry Canyon (which is quite pretty) to near the Dirty Devil River and to the exit canyon. An impressive cattle trail (100 or so years old?) reaches the rim here, but it looks improbable from below. We then found our way back to the vehicle in six hours.

The only major challenge was the routefinding.

April 22 2023

Shaylee, Justin, Sean, and I canyoneered through the fantastic Larry Canyon in Robbers Roost. It is one of my favorites and I hadn't done it in more than 23 years. There was a big group in there, but we were able to pass them and everything went smoothly except for one place where Shaylee got stuck for a few minutes. The dark sections of the canyon are really nice and some of the best sections of slot canyon anywhere.

With Mike Kelsey. Great canyon and one of my favorites.

Fun slot!  Sucess!

Nice rappells and narrows. Took Josh on his first slot. Hot hike out but worth it. It was awhile since I did my last slot.

Hot but Exciting  Sucess!

It was quite an experience for me going though this area. My first slot canyon which was a good experience. The only part that freaked me out a little was the spider section where there were hundreds if not thousands of spiders! The walk back was very hot which felt like forever. The car got stuck in sand twice which was a interesting experience to dig it out.

Larry's Rocks  Sucess!

Warren and Michelle made it through on Saturday. Larry's is an awesome canyon with some super tight slots and amazing views! Bring as small a pack as possible to minimize the amount of time you will be carrying it in your hands. The only water we encountered was at the bottom of rappel 2 and it was about knee deep.

A good solid 5  Sucess!

Descended sometime in 04, spring I think. Thought there was one good chamber in Larry, which we caught at the PERFECT time bathed in light. Just angelic. But by far the highlight was the hike out for me, i love the RR country and the big views of sandstone marching across the landscape. But everything is relative...

Amazing Canyon  Sucess!

We got a late start and forgot the guide book. Aside from this, this is the coolest canyon that I have done. We used a 30m rope for rap 2, bad idea!! But we got out of it. Hiked out to our staged car at the lower car park but we forgot the keys in the other cars! So much for shuttling.
