This was an extremely fun acclimatization warmup for Mt. Shasta the following day. The road had just opened the day before and there were only a few cars in the parking lot all day. I had much fun scrambling about on the rocks and snowshoeing around the crater rim.

With Wei. Crowded summit with hikers perching on the little pinnacles. Great view.

Checked out NE, SE, and S Faces for 2002 ski season. Discovered the short class 3 variation by accident.

In late May, 1999, the road was still closed about a mile from the trailhead due to 20+ ft of uncleared snow. So, I parked my car at the end of the cleared section, and hiked the rest of the way. I wasn't expecting Lassen to present much of a challenge, and it didn't. However, the wind did. It was relentlessly howling at what I would estimate 70-80 mph. I could barely stand up at times without being blown off my feet. About 400 vertical feet from the summit, I ducked behind a large rock and considered retreating. After a couple seconds of thought, I decided that this small mountain wasn't going to get the best of me, so I pressed on. Fortunately, I got to the summit without getting blown off. The descent was uneventful (albeit windy).

By this time of year, the road was plowed and there was very little snow remaining on the trail. The snow had already started breaking up on the Northeast Face, however, there were still some decent runs on the South Face. This was my first time up this volcano and unfortunately I didn't bring my skis. On the way up I ran into a guy hiking up in flip-flop sandals, t-shirt, and shorts, with his snowboard and boots. I got to see him ride down the South Face using his sandals as "gloves" as well as a skier who was stuck out on the slope. Since this guy wasn't moving, a ranger had to go up to meet him - not sure what happened there. It was a gorgeous day and I highly recommend going when there's still snow.
