Leatherleaf Saxifrage
Leatherleaf Saxifrage along the shores of Hagen Lake to the NE of Stonesthrow Peak. This red beauty is found all over lake shores in the month of August in the Olympic Mountains.~August 8,2006~

This is the fruiting head of leatherleaf saxifrage, also known as false saxifrage. The scientific name is Leptarrhena pyrolifolia. The flowers are pretty simple and not very showy, but on a bright sunny day the red seed heads almost glow.

WOW! Thanks so much! I've asked my biology professor at my University to find their name, searched all over the internet to no avail. Well, I love them anyways. They add so much color to the creeks and meadows.

Yes, they are among my favorites too. They are not as common in the inland mountains, at least not below the border. I've only seen them in the Selkirks of north Idaho. The thick bicolored leaves are pretty neat as well.
