cabFrom Sonora Pass  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 5, 2014

After a morning climb of Sonora and Stanislaus, I hiked Leavitt Peak from Sonora Pass. There were lots of people on the PCT, but the views from Leavitt more than made up for the crowds. I took the direct route back to Sonora Pass rather that following the PCT all the way. This was a great descent route along a very clear use trail that saves lots of time and distance.

Date Climbed: May 25, 2014

I spent the afternoon admiring views that were a mix of snow, desolate terrain, and endless High Sierra peaks to the southeast. I started with my dogs from my car camp spot east of Sonora Pass, meeting up with the PCT at the wilderness boundary sign atop the ridge, and then continuing to Leavitt Peak. After returning along the PCT to the boundary signs, we continued on what we could find of the PCT descent to Sonora Pass in the snow, enjoying some fun glissades.

From 108, took the trail up, and the "climbers shortcut" back. Found some cool mineral covered rocks near the summit.

Came up via the PCT, was pleasantly surprised by the great views from the top. The many patchy snowfield crossings on the PCT were annoying, but an easy outing and slog up the scree field to the top. Trip report at http://www.mountainhiker.org/trip_report.aspx?id=91

Capt Brewster

One more time! Probably my fourth ascent of Leavitt over the past 20 years; with a friend this time. We launched from the Sonora Pass trail head on the PCT. After a short distance we went off-trail, scrambling up the spine of the ridge. then followed the spine southbound until we met the PCT again. It's always a fabulous experience to Leavitt and back. This day was typically brilliant. We stayed on the PCT for the entire return. Cheers!

I climbed it from the PCT at Sonora Pass. There is a decent use trail to tame the hellish volcanic rubble.

We were the second party to summit in July of 2012. This is a popular peak for a reason, easy access off of an excellent section of the PCT from Sonora Pass.

A nice quick hike with great views. Wind was so strong near the summit I almost turned back, but wound up getting there by walking in a crouch and sitting out the worst of the gusts.

A new summit register had been placed just four days before by James Barlow and Heath Wilhoit of the SPS section. Thanks guys!

Date Climbed: Jun 16, 2011

Skinned up Blue Canyon then on to the north face of Leavitt. Cramponed up the couloir and met with high winds at the summit. Awesome ski descent down the couloir and then back to the car, although it gets a little flat in spots. The couloir is 40 degrees max at the top, and mostly 35 I'd say.

This was my third time up. I love camping at Latopie Lake. This time the wind was sustained 50mph with winds gusting to 75 on the kestrel.

Date Climbed: Sep 5, 2010

We were camped about a mile east of Sonora Pass, providing an opportunity for extra elevation gain on the hike and some fun scrambling to reach the trail. This was my daughter's highest summit to date, just before her third birthday. She insisted on hiking herself all the way up to the ridgetop where the wilderness signs stand before taking a nap much of the rest of the way to the summit in the pack. Mom was NOT happy when we got back after dark.

Did this peak as part of the acclimatization process for summitting Mount Whitney later that week. Very nice ridgewalk on PCT and great views from the top! About 5 hours there and back from Sonora Pass.

Nice hike. Some snow on the way up but easily manageable. Pretty cool view from the summit; different from the "typical" Sierra scenery. Felt surreal.
