Second time up from Blue Canyon via the NW ridge, beautiful route. No snow this year(low snow), made short work of the route. Then descended the PCT over to Sonora Peak. Not a person on the peak.

derekp62Day Hiking Leavitt  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jun 9, 2007

Day hiked Leavitt Peak with some friends from the Loma Preita Peak Climbing Section. I was surprise at the amount of snow we had to traverse. You can see for 50 miles for this peak.

Climbed Y couloir with friend Andrew. There was A LOT of snow up there. Well worth it, though, with views south to Mt. Lyell from the top.

sierramtngoat"Y" Couloir  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jun 16, 2006

Climbed the Y Couloir with my Buddy Dave. Man eating suncups and runnels slowed us down but we were successful (snow convered 95% of the route). The upper Y was nicely steep, probably 55 degrees or more.

Date Climbed: Sep 6, 1999

On our way to visit sister-inlaw. We stopped and I pleaded for a quick run to the summit. I had serious time limits from the wife, so I ran as hard as I could. Next time I'll be able to llok around more.

Great day but very windy! My son's first summit and overnight trip. Blue Canyon is a great way to the peak and nice lakes along the way.

JonodoRoute Climbed: Southeast Ridge Date Climbed: July 2, 2005  Sucess!

Holy Postholing!!! Still a fair amount of snow. On the larger fields sun cups were up to 3 feet deep. On average 1-2 feet. Later in the afternoon the postholing was terrible. I sunk to my groin several times, but mostly knee and thigh depth. For a short 9 mile hike, it took me over 8 hours to complete. It was all well worth it. I think Sonora Pass are is one of my favorite places in CA. Although I'm a little tired of making it a day trip from Sacramento. 7 hours of driving in a day gets to be a bit much. Anyway, Leavitt is a fun and relatively easy peak if you leave enough time to acclimate.

Nice hike from Leavitt Lake. The route follows a nice ridge with plenty of lakes in view. There are also several other peaks to bag in this area.

This would make a great training run--going from Leavitt Lake to the summit--about 2000 feet of gain, with some nice sections of rolling ridgeline to stretch it out.

Not much to say about this one, except that I was pretty tired after Rodgers Peak the day before. Cold and windy on the summit...

Came back almost a year later as a warm-up (paired with nearby Stanislaus) for some higher peaks down by Whitney. Pleasant hike.

AlpinistRoute Climbed: Ascent from Kennedy Lake Date Climbed: May 25, 2003  Sucess!

Bruce and I climbed the south face reaching the western saddle, then walked up to the summit. The ascent took 6 hours rom nearby Kennedy Lake due to heavy snow on the upper half of the ridge. I was climbing knee deep in many places as the snow was soft. My friend who is heavier than me was sinking even deeper, slowing our progress. We descended via the eastern ridge, step-sliding most of the way the down. Yahoooo!

The weather was perfect at Kenndy Lake, at 70 degrees with partly cloudy skies. However, it was blowing like hell on the summit and we only stayed a few minutes.

We meet a group of skiers near the summit who came up from Blue Canyon and were skiing the bowl on the north side of the ridge.

Leavitt Peak is the highest point in the Emigrant Wilderness and offers great veiws!

This is a great walk from Sonora Pass. Many lakes are visable on this trip. This mountain has a flat summit.
