Amazing!!!

How do you capture and image like this? I have always wondered how this is done. Nice shot,

Re: Amazing!!!

Use a tripod, open the shutter, and wait. I've never had much luck though. Usually by the time the good bolts are visible it starts raining into the lens.

Probably not a good idea to try for a shot like this while climbing a mountain! Unless you've made a pact with Zeus.

Re: Amazing!!!

Actually, John did not use a tripod. But the key is that you have to be lucky and have the shutter open longer.

very very

very good! I've tried to get this sort of image a few times, but like you said usually end up with it raining before the lightning gets to the right place.

Re: very very

I think it also helps to live in an area that has good storms.

It has to be dry enough so that there isn't too much low clouds and rain obscuring the view but enough heat and humidity for strong electrified storms.

Incredible shot!

I try lightning pics when a storm brews, but never have had much luck. Great shot!

Very nice!

Yep open shutter, you can see a slight motion blur in the tree from it being open for a short period. GREAT shot and rare to capture!

Question

Amazing photo! What ISO/Aperture did you use and how did you know what would expose the shot correctly without anything to meter?

Excellent

Re questions about exposure try time exposure with tightest aperture. Bolts between the camera and the horizon or behind the camera can overexpose the ground, I assume you want it black. Turn it off when you think you got a good one and try again. Experiment--do a lot of em. Have never tried in daylight.

Purple Sky

Was the sky really that purple? Excellent shot though!

Re: Purple Sky

Yes, the sky was that color. This photo was not altered in any way. Thanks for the compliment.
