Lil' Smokey in South Lake Tahoe

Lil' Smokey in South Lake Tahoe

PLEASE DON'T VOTE! (YOU CAN COMMENT if you want to.) "Lil' Smokey," a dehydrated 6-month-old black bear cub horribly burned in the Northern California wildfires, was fighting for his life Monday at a care center in South Lake Tahoe. "Everybody should keep some good thoughts for him because he is pretty critical," said Cheryl Millham, founder and executive director of Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care. The cub, weighing just 8.5 pounds, has been treated with antibiotics, other medicines and clean bandages each day. Until Monday, when his appetite flagged, he dined on peaches, pears, grapes and plums. Millham credited firefighter Adam Deem, who found the bear in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest west of Redding, CA, last Thursday, with saving the bear's life. "This bear would have been dead right now, dying an agonizing, horrible death with burned paws if that firefighter had not picked it up," said Millham. "Thank goodness this firefighter had some compassion." "If (the bear's) pads regenerate and the toenails regrow, the cub could go back to the wild," said Millham. The rescue center can only accept cubs from birth up to 50 pounds. The center has two other bear cubs, also six months old, who have grown to roly-poly furballs weighing 35 to 40 pounds. If Lil' Smokey survives, but cannot be returned to the wild, he would be kept in captivity. July 21, 2008 from Belleville News (source) UPDATE: As of August 3rd, this little Cubby is doing fine! Great news from my source in S. Lake Tahoe!!!

On behalf of the bear, THANKS for your kind

My best wishes

I hope his eyes will shine soon again with the joy of being back home, in the wilderness he belongs to, with his health recovered.

Re: My best wishes

Gracie, Marco! It takes some TIME to recover
from a traumatic injury, such as one sustained in a fire or sudden lightning strike.

I think this little one is in very good hands.

The bear seems to be recovering nicely;
it's THE HUMANS I worry about!

Re: 10/10

Well, it takes a special kind of bonding
between critters and humans. I grew up in a
city, and it took me a long time to realize that these critters were HERE long before I was; or that "K-Mart" down the street was.

I'm sure this cubby is doin' just fine!!

Re: Aww

It's amazing once you "switch off" the
"rattle and hum" of electronics, and
(physically) get yourself out there into the
dynamic world of wildlife - HOW MUCH people
really CARE. Have a great one, klwagar! EH???

Do you have any

new information on this cub?
Most humans would have some mental damage from such a degree of dehydration. And I have to admit that I did not even recognize that it was a bear cub...
and I would like to vote, but have to obey you Larry...

Re: Do you have any...

Obey ???

Thanks for your concern for Lil' Smokey ...

Here's the last info I received from a CA newspaper :

"Nearly three months after his ordeal, Lil' Smokey has gained nearly 50 pounds and he no longer needs the bandages and booties on his paws.
More importantly, the pads of his feet -- and all 20 of his claws -- were beginning to grow back. With his paws getting back to normal, caretakers say there's a good chance Smokey will be able to live in the wild again.
"He's just doing great," center volunteer Tom Millham said. "He's obviously getting harder to handle.
"

So, far as I know, the little guy is out in
the woods (once again) eating snails and berries! : )) ))!

Re: Fantastic!

Gracie, Roberto.

It's not my picture. It appeared in the
national media about three years ago.

I'm sure Lil' Smokey appreciates the actions
of mankind in this particular instance.

Re: Thanks for posting this, Larry!

Thanks, Eric! I think Lil' Smokey has since
been released back into the wild ..

Little miracles are the BEST kind.

And, LIFE is definitely a BEAR ..
