Austria is landlocked country in Central
Europe, with The Alps dominating the western and southern parts whilst
the eastern provinces, Vienna included, lie in the Danube basin.
Austrian federal republic is divided into nine states ("Bundesländer"
in German).
State highpoints are given by elevation in descending
order. Few of them are located on borders between two or more federal states and
they count as highpoints for more the one single federal state.
For
the states bordering with other countries, a common name other then German is given
as well. Again, for the states known internationally under common English
name, this (English) name is listed at the very beginning.
