tmcranevia Cherry Canyon  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 9, 2008

We began at Orson Smith Trailhead and took Cherry Canyon trail, crossing over to Draper Ridge trail at approx. 8,500 ft. Rather than following the faint trail back to the SW, we maintained our elevation and headed directly south until intersecting the DR trail. The bushwhacking wasn't bad at all and seemed to make for a more direct route. Followed DR and then Jacob's Ladder the rest of the way to the summit. Followed the same route down. Round trip time was 10 hours.

I took 4 liters of water and finished them off about twenty minutes from the car, so 5 or 6 liters might be a good idea.

Overall, an inspiring peak with great views.

I climbed this peak for the 5th time on August 10, 2007. This time we started at the Cherry Canyon logging trail starting at the new Orson Hyde trail head at 0800. It took us about 4.5 to get to outlaw cabin, and about another 2.5 to get on top of the summit. This is a very long route, but very scenic. I do not recommend doing this hike alone. During the hot summer months, I recommend taking at least 1.5 gallons of liquid with you because there is only one spring on the mountain if you do the bear canyon route. I usually will freeze 3 32oz bottles of Poweraid, and take 3 more 32 oz bottles and water in my pack and work them through the day. I can’t emphasis enough, take plenty of water. I have been on this mountain 5 times from different routes and it always is a mountain that deserves care and respect. The final approach to the summit is very technical and tricky and not for the faint of heart. It is a project to climb this mountain from any route, but you will be glad you did. The views are spectacular. Coming off the mountain, we thought we were in the wrong canyon, but fortunately with good maps, land nav skills and a GPS locator, we got back on track. It got dark on us. We went back down the bear canyon trail, and the view of the valley was wonderful. On the way down, we met several night hikers coming up. We finally got back to the vehicle about midnight. Lone Peak is one of my favorite hikes because of its views, difficulty to access, and unique summit.

Up and down Cherry Canyon. So much fun in an amazing place! Took us over 12 hours but worth every minute. Definitely recommend the CC trail...having the water available in Bear Canyon is a bit of heaven.

Woke up at 6:00 AM this morning. Drove to the Orson Smith trailhead in Draper. I was on the trail by 7:00 AM. It got hot really fast. I made it to the peak by noon. I played on the peak for an hour or two (calling friends and family to boast, of course) then headed down. Let's just say I took a somewhat 'unconventional' route down the mountain, but I made it OK. Boy, the west side of this mountain is a SCORCHER on a hot summer day. Coming down that part of the mountain was fairly unpleasant. I was down by 5:45, IIRC.

On the plus side, I didn't run into any rattlesnakes. Seems like I can't go on a hike these days without running into one.

The Bear/Cherry Canyon route is long and it gains a lot of elevation. (6000-something feet?)

Great mountain.

I was a young buck (19) taking my even younger cousin (14). This was our first attempt at summiting anything! I had wanted to summit this peak since I was ~11. We went up Jacob's Ladder and down Draper Ridge. We were both EXHAUSTED after, what we thought was, a grueling hike. It was a beautiful hike and, to this day, Lone Peak is my Favorite summit!

Not certain climbing the peak 100 times or documenting it that many is more impressive. Great incentive for the rest of us and good luck on the next 100.

Beautiful snowshoe to the top of this beautiful peak. The weather was gorgeous (if a bit windy), and the terrain was amazing. I think I liked it better in winter than in summer, despite the additional effort required.

Lots of icy areas, but we made the top with some snowshoes. Quite a fun hike, although it took forever.

Loved it! One of my favorite climbs. We came up via Schoolhouse Springs, and climbed about 6,000 verticle feet. Had to walk a ways to get to the Lone Peak Wilderness trailhead sign at the lower Hamongog. I brought 5 liters of water, and drank it all by the time we got back down to the upper Hamongog. And that was on a cool day. There is a small stream there, though a little hard to find the water. Took about 13 hours. Saddle from south to real summit looks scarier than it is:) Lots of fun.

June 28, 2012 - Hiked up to the cirque with five friends. Spent the next two days rock climbing. Did the Open Book Route on the main summit wall and the Lowe Route on Question Mark Wall. Hiked out on the third day. Summited the main peak twice, as well as the south and west peaks.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
May 5, 2011 - A group of seven of us went up Bells to the NE Coulior. Climbed the Coulior to the peak and then descended via Big Willow. Round trip took 11 hours.
Cherry Canyon/Draper Ridge -- March 2, 2010. Began at the Orson Smith Park on the Bear Canyon trail (aka Cherry Canyon Logging Trail). After the Mahogany tunnel we moved onto the Draper Ridge route, and followed that past Enos(?) peak, to Cowboy flat, into the cirque and then up the NW ridge to the peak.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Aug 23, 2007 - Schoolhouse Springs trail. We started in Alpine on the Schoolhouse Springs trail, which starts as a dirt road up to the first hamongog where the Lone Peak Wilderness area begins. Took 1.5 hours to cover that section. Then we followed the single track trail to the second hamongog (which took just under an hour). A little ways past the seond hamongog we headed strait up the mountain following a faint trail next to a creek bed. Eventually we had to route find to the saddle of the West and South Peaks. We arrived at the saddle after 5.5 hours. First we bagged the West Peak, then the South Peak, and lastly the North Peak(highest). Bagging all three peaks, and returning to our car in Alpine took 13 hours.

Here is our video on the North Peak: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woNgsCr1TZc (notice in the video I incorrectly call the North Peak the South Peak and vice versa)

I was stupid to have picked this mountain for my first summit let alone the Jacob's Ladder route. It was incredibly hard but well worth the effort. You can find out all about my efforts in the trip report section called: How NOT to climb Jacob's Ladder.

Best summit I've done in the Wasatch so far, and maybe ever. Took Jacob's ladder route, camped in the meadows near the Draper Ridge Junction and summited Saturday morning. Although a longer route, I think I prefer the Cherry Canyon trail to Jacob's Ladder Route.

Climbed 2 times:
July 21, 2007 Up Jacobs Ladder with some friends.
August 1, 2007 With Grizz and Asher as our final peak in our series from N. Thunder to S. Thunder to Bighorn and finally here. We were racing the imminent electrical storm as we hiked up to the summit of Lone Peak and were only permitted by our best sense to stay on top for a few minutes. We descended the Cherry Canyon trail and I was rejuvenated by the spring in Bear Canyon. It was the best water I have ever tasted.
