downbootiesThe Keyhole  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Sep 1, 2003

downbooties

I don't remember the exact date because I was on a roadtrip. Started around 0200 after catching a few hours of sleep in my chevy metro. Passed a friendly guy from NM on the way up. When I got to the Boulderfield, the campers there looked sad because it was too stormy to summit that day. Being a stubborn Alaskan, I pushed on and it was a little sketchy in some areas without my axe and crampons. I had to jam body parts in icy cracks to move up and down in some places and there was one area where ice crystals blew in my eyes. It made for good memories, but the summit was too stormy to see any views, which is unfortuate. Around my return to the keyhole, I met the NM guy again. I think he was worried about my safety so I walked down with him.

I climbed the Trough from Glacier Gorge TH. Great weather held until late in the descent - I had a calm and sunny summit all to myself!

My bud Scott and I hauled all of our climbing crap up to do Keyhole Ridge to find out that all the access ramps were covered in new snow, still managed to eke out the normal route though

AspenRoute Climbed: Keyhole -- with BLOOD in my urine!  Sucess!

My team and I set out from the University of Denver to take Longs Peak. I didn't know I was on the verge of being severely dehydrated. So after high-altitude hiking onward and dodging rock spiders on the boulderfield I felt the need to relieve myself and when I did...OMG...my urine was blood red. I drank as much as I could and continued onward to the summit. Fortunately, I didn't have a kidney infection and the clear yellow urine returned 24 hours later :D Wooo Hoooooooo! I'd never hike again without properly hydrated! :)

Would be much better without the people. The 2 others in my party turned around at the boulder field. Barely missed sunrise on the peak beause we could not sleep in the car in the parking lot. Started way too early, or should I say late.

Long day. 17 hrs due to bushwacking, and long approach. Connected with the main route at the Keyhole final slab.

Awesome hike, got an early start on a weekday, and beat the crowds on the way up. Dedicated to my late friend and coworker Melanie. Threw out a few m+m's for her on the summit.

I love Long's, and the cirque around chasm lake. Heavy!! Have enjoyed climbing on the Diamond, skiing the Trough, and camping in the boulderfield on the way to hiking the Keyhole. A special place.

There were a lot of people, but I certainly wasn't expecting a Wilderness experience. Before we left I spent weeks pumping up my group of high school kids about the importance of safety, hydration, warm clothes, and the like. They were all appalled and a little frightened I think, when we saw a dude just after Chasm lake wearing nothing but shorts and a tank top with a liter of Coke in one hand just after sunrise. Talk about a 'teachable moment'....

I climbed from trailhead to summit in 5 hours. What a workout. Don't expect to get any solitude on this one! It is a "social climb" My summation? Long's Peaks difficulty is overrated but enjoyable.

Camped at Black Lake. Good mixed climbing though in the Trough -rock, snow and ice. Turned around where the Bulls Eyes start.

My first time up Longs Peak was via the Keyhole route with a group from the Loveland Mountain Club. Since then I have climbed the Keyhole Ridge, Cables, Kepplinger's Couloir and the Keyhole route for a total of 10 times to the summit out of 14 attempts. When we summited Keplinger's in April we were the only ones on the summit...a rarity on Longs. My last time to the summit was by the Keyhole route, solo. Each ascent holds special memories for me.

It was pretty easy-going until the Keyhole. After that it was fun scrambling and amazing views all the way up to the summit, especially looking down into Glacier Gorge. Despite efforts to start early enough, the group I was with wasn't acclimatized to the elevation and had to go quite slow, which caused us to get caught in the middle of a lightning storm on the way back down. See "En'lightning' Experience" trip report for details.

Climbed this on my b-day that year, and my awesome partner whipped out some cupcakes and candles on the summit for a surprise celebration. All the other climbers on the summit joined in the singing!

6th time. Couldn't keep me away, after only climbing this route two weeks earlier. No wonder it is so crowded!
