Looking back north along the...
Looking back north along the screefield from hell. If you go too far north (as I did thinking I could access the north ridge) you'll have to come back across this steep and loose rock. Do yourself a favor and avoid this mess. It slides constantly and is not very stable. It's also painstakingly slow to work across it to the more solid moss-covered stuff.

When we climbed Pico Viejo we had to ascend through this kind of underground. 3000 feet - no make that 4500 feet - every two steps up took you one step down again!



But surfing down again was quite some fun. You mustn't mind, though, that you'll be covered with black lava dust.
