Looking down Mt. Darwin North Face

Looking down Mt. Darwin North Face

30-July-2006: Looking down the snow finger of Mt. Darwin North Face from just below the summit plateau. The angle here was probably 40-45 degrees. From here it was a short scramble up to the plateau.
It was about noonish, and clouds were gathering. Luckily, no storm activity happened until 4-ish, by which time we had long since descended (via west ridge).

Looks like a fun route.

Re: Nice job Rob

Thanks Martin ! Later on in the season this thing apparently ices up - the snow cover melts off the glacier and as the nights get longer and colder, melt / freeze cycles form ice in the upper sections.

The only problem is the approach - the trailhead from North Lake is 9200' and you have to hump gear up over Lamarck Col at 12700-ish, then down 1000' (which makes for a harsh return trip). Needless to say I am enjoying ibuprofen right now :)

That DOES look awfully fun!

But wouldn't you rather have some nice red wine instead of ibuprofin?? ;^)

Re: That DOES look awfully fun!

Well, the first three pitches were great -- fast-paced free climbing, everything was working well... but getting rained and hailed on at 10:30 am spooked us. We bailed after three pitches, from just below the chimney. Oh well! (BTW, in case you're interested, two 200 ft. ropes reach the ground on the northeast side of the peak from just below the chimney.)

Re: That DOES look awfully fun!

Thanks for the beta Carolyn ! Sorry to hear about the weather. I really need to go do Cathedral sometime (sounds like a weekday is best though :-O)

Re: good show

Thanks Craig ! Why do I always do these things the hard way ???

btw Once I saw Mendel that title sequence from your video started running through my head : "when hell freezes over - I'll climb there too" :)
