Looking down on Gardner...

Looking down on Gardner...

Looking down on Gardner Meadow from the upper slopes of Gardner Mountain on July 5th, 1998. I camped in the stand of tall trees at center. That is the location of the main camp in the meadows (room for plenty of parties).

Re: What happened...

Just your ordinary old forest fire. This one happened a long time ago, giving the burned out stands time to turn gray. Gardner is located pretty far east of the Cascade Crest. As such, it gets much hotter and drier in the fire season. The moisture from the Pacific gets wrung out of the sky before it makes it to the east side. Still, it is not the common post-fire scene. Vast stands of light-gray like this are not common.

Thunder story: yeah it's one of the most memorable weather moments for me. A lightning encounter a year, that's all I used to ask. Last summer I missed out (dodged successfully) for the first time in a great string of summers.
