Re: No brine flies and biting gnats,Nope. The brine shrimping season is over, so the brine flies have no reason to be there. And the gnats all headed south. Wait! You're south! Have you seen them?

Re: No brine flies and biting gnats,That's right! I'm south and you're north.
I am the Ying, and you are the Yang.
I dunno where those pesky little critters go. They don't show up in the mountains of
Arizona 'till March or April.
I visited Antelope Island last May, and I
was eaten alive by the swarms. Looks like
January's the perfect time to visit Stansbury Island.

Re: No brine flies and biting gnats,Yeah, they can be nasty. Once you climb up on any of the peaks or ridgelines, they are nowhere to be seen.
Yep, winter in the Great Basin ain't too bad. Plenty of things to climb on without having to take a chairlift and pay 70 bucks!

Re: No brine flies and biting gnats,Yeah - I wonder how many people actually
climb Deseret Peak in winter? I know that
access would probably be an issue.
I tried it one time in late winter, and had
to turn back due to avalanche conditions.
