Louse Benchmark  Sucess!

Climbed from "trailhead" in the new damonte ranch sudivision that is going up via Eagle Canyon. Eagle canyon takes a significant amount of time between route finding and walking on the boulders. About 2/3 of the way up the canyon it becomes a "box canyon" with a large 10-20 foot "rock ladder" that is nearly vertical. The handholds are great until the one at the top which is not too bad but can get your heart rate going. Going up the left side of this is easier than when I tried it on the right. Rest of the way is easy going. Would recommend taking the road all the way to Louse Benchmark. I tried coming down the northern way and it was really rocky and a little dangerous for solo hiking. Eagle Canyon may be one of my favorite day hikes right out of Reno. A flock of mountain bluebirds was hanging where the canyone joins the plateua the past several times I've been there so look out for those.

Fantastic Scenery!  Sucess!

Update! The construction of new roads has progressed to a point that enables easy access to the beginning of the Canyon from the end of Palladium Mine Drive, just east of Damonte Ranch High School. Since it was a Sunday, there was no construction to worry about. The climb through the canyon was strenuous by very enjoyable. Lots of interesting rock formations. Took me 1.5 hours to get to the top of the canyon. The relatively flat plateau opens up with wonderful views of Camel Back, and other parts of the Virginia Range as you move east. I took the easterly path up to the top of Louse BM. Some more scrambling toward the top. Great views of Mt Rose and all of Truckee Meadows far below. Windy but sunny. On the way down I decided to skip the canyon and take the dirt path along the north side of the ridge.

Fun Climb  Sucess!

Awesome hike, the canyon was a great route to take, lots of scrambling. We saw a lot of wildlife on the way and stumbled upon some obsidian flakes possibly from Natives making tools. Great views, fun climb!
