Lucifer Sam?

Lucifer Sam?

"Lucifer Sam, siam cat.. Always sitting by your side, Always - by your side. That cat's something I can't explain ..." The bobcat is both more common and more widely distributed in the Sonoran Desert than the mountain lion. It hunts smaller prey and can more easily adapt to marginal habitats. This small cat, (though twice the size of a house cat), is solitary, avoiding other bobcats; and it is also careful to avoid mountain lions, which will kill it. The bobcat is a good climber, retreating to trees for safety, but it prefers to hunt on the ground. The bobcat is mostly nocturnal; like the lion, it is secretive and shy, usually keeping to the more thickly vegetated areas and therefore not often seen by people. Have you had a close encounter with "Lucifer Sam," lately ??? November 11, 2010

Encounter...

Very good photograph! Last year, during the winter, I had one feeding on a road-kill deer carcass on my property. Got to see it several times. Rare...

Re: Encounter...

Thanks and yes, I don't run into these critters very often, unless I see one in a
public campground. The desert crawls with them..

Couldn't help but notice that you sail?
Have you ever been out on Lake Chelan, or
is it too windy out there. I need to take
my wife to Lake Wenatchee sometime.

I was a firefighter at Lake Wenatchee in 1986. What an interesting place! Have you been..

Re: Encounter...

Yes, on both accounts to Lake Chelan and Lake Wenatchee. Chelan has developed and gotten quiet busy, thus my favorite time to visit is winter. A great scenic is to take the Lady of the Lake passenger ferry to Stehikien. Grand mountain viewing from the decks of the vessel. In the winter there are few passengers.

Re: Encounter...

Yeah, but my time is limited, so I would
probably visit in late summer or early Fall.

I have spent time in Leavenworth. I'd really
like to see Colchuck Lake before it freezes.
Maybe next year..

Re: A beauty!

Thanks and welcome back!

I suppose they really wouldn't make good pets. Cats can be a bit moody and unpredictable, to say the least.

I'm a city slicker. What amazes me about
Arizona is, you don't have to travel far to
possibly encounter wildlife like this.

Incredible capture!

These kitty cats are usually pretty shy. Not often that a shot like this is taken.
Nice work Larry.

Re: Incredible capture!

Thanks, Roxy!

I'm not a wildcat expert, and I don't own
several acres of prime land in the country.

But, I have seen bobcats running around in
public campgrounds.

Safe to say, these kitties are probably
doing themselves a favor by avoiding humans,
and I gotta congratulate them for doing so !

Re: A linx?

Lynx is a feline genus that includes four cats: Canadian Lynx, Eurasian Lynx, Iberian Lynx and Bobcat.

The Canadian Lynx has a much denser coat,
in order to survive in colder climates.

Re: A linx?

No problemo..

To make a long story short, ALL bobcats
are lynxes, but not ALL lynxes are bobcats.

Here kitty, kitty.. : )

Re: amazing beast

It's also wild to meet such an animal in
the hard, desolate vastness of the desert.

The desert can chew you up and spit you out!

Re: amazing beast

I have never been to a real desert, but I will surely think twice before I would go hehhh

Lynx is such secretive loner that it is almost unthinkable to meet one in Carpathian forests, I'd bet that might be even less possible than meeting a wolf there. Fascinating beast!

Re: amazing beast

I have never met a wolf in the wilderness.

Back in the 1990s, thought I heard a
wildcat, (possibly a puma), prowling near
my tent in the night. I was camped in
an area where several sightings of large
cats had recently been reported.

I don't know what the odds are of actually
coming face-to-face with a cougar, but I
figure if I wait long enough, then it might
happen.

Thanks, Tomek!

Re: amazing beast

I think any encounter with such wild animal is an incredible and unforgetable experience nowadays. I saw some nice documentaries about nature freaks dreaming to film a wolf for example or a herd of our Carpathian bisons here in Bieszczady mtns. If you are not a man from the forest that can take you long weeks of sitting "on a tree" and waiting for that single occasion... still much much more fascinating than rotting bored home in front of tv hehhh, I admire those people.

Something from local newspaper about our hungry bears feasting on one bison for a few days
Hungry bears

Cheers

Re: amazing beast

If you spend your time in front of the TV
watching the Nature Channel, all you get
is a crook in your neck and a liter in your
belly. : )

Personally, I have a lot of respect for
"nature nuts," especially the ones that fall
from (for) trees.

Re: Dang!

No worries..

The desert is so different from the PAC NW!

Today, we got snow in the mountains above
6,000', but it will probably melt off by
early next week.

I can see why folks would want to live in
western Colorado or Washington state.

I figure I have at least ten more years of
living in Arizona, tripping over rattlesnakes
and veering around spiny cactus plants.
