A wonderful spot to put up your tent - by Lacul Lungul (Long Lake)in the cirque at the foot of the highest peak of the Parîng Mountains, Romania, 1979. Still allowed! My tent, which slept 2-3 people, was already old. It must have been made in the 1960s, had no zippers, weighed 'just' 4.2 kg, a sheet of thin transparent plastic substituted the rain fly proper so the total weight was nearly 4.5 kg. Inflatable rubber mattress: 2 kg per person. Sleeping bag: 2 kg per person. Normally my backpack weighed over 30 kg at the start. Once I happened to be carrying 42 but that was overdone. Bad for the spine, especially if you were born with a funny one and your doc has forbidden you to do any backpacking.

Thanks very much for your compliment. I actually thought a new media representative would be annoyed about such glamourless and backward material from an obscure corner of the world blatantly pushing for equality as well as international recognition, claiming that if one pic does offset 1,000 words then a pic plus 100 words (not to mention the links and wonderful captions :)) should automatically get at least 30% more of the vote, and last but not least, fighting ageism on SP by pretending an ancient SP member can manage to use some of the tools that can be somehow qualified as kind of the most rudimentary new media techniques, such as the basics of HTML. A little bit more/less;) seriously, I guess you too must like Larry's classics then.

Perhaps I should recategorize myself? I thought putting "contractor" would make me sound like a mercenary. :-) You have some of the best beta and images on all of SP (in this reformed Luddite's humbled opine). :-) Scanned slides trump manipulated DSLRS's snaps any day!!!!

Well, the way I see it, a contractor is better than an employee, which in turn is a lot better than the average media tycoon. What's more, I think mercenaries can be OK as long as the cause is right (see Seven Samurai by Kurosawa – Old Media!!!!!:-))

I do wish it had been much less than 30. Such a weight was really bad for my back. Last year I wasn't able to carry more than a dozen kilos. :(
