I am interested in climbing California mountains that have prominence greater than 2,000 feet. Crater Peak qualifies because it is #49 on the list. I couldn't find any Trip Reports on SP so I researched my maps and decided the Magee Trailhead was the shortest route to the summit.
I started the day in Medford, Oregon and drove to Ash Creek Mountain. After I tagged that summit, I drove to Burney Mountain and drove to the lookout on top. Great views from there. I continued my day by driving south to the Magee Trailhead.
I started up the mountain at 2:00PM and it was already 86 degrees in the parking area. Nothing was stirring on this hot day, so I slowly made my way up the trail to Magee Peak. Thankfully, there was a little breeze blowing when I broke out of the trees at about 7,800 feet.
The trail was easy to follow all the way to Magee Peak and beyond to Crater Peak. Fantastic views from Lassen Peak in the south to Mt. Shasta in the north. Coming back down, I was surprised at how steep the trail actually was. No wonder I was tired and used all my water.
I was back at the car in 4.5 hours and had covered 8.0 miles and gained about 3,000 feet. The drive back to Medford was uneventful except for the tremendous sunset throught he thunder clouds that were dumping their goodies in the Shasta Valley.
