Manly Peak Summit Boulder

Manly Peak Summit Boulder

Penelope Smrz is nearing the true summit of Manly Peak, Death Valley. The summit boulder problem is fairly steep and a bit technical face climbing. May 2010 photo: Alois Smrz.

Great Shot

Thank you for adding this to my new page. It's funny that this route is still often referred to as class 3 in old route descriptions, considering that the modern climbing scale has changed so much. What would you rate it?

Re: Great Shot

I'm pretty bad judging scrambles but my wife Penelope thinks that it was a classic 4th class problem. She feels that if one falls off of it, it would result in a bad injury, so solid 4th class rating would do.

Good info on your part mentioning rope and shoes. It seems (these days) DPS recommends both rope and climbing shoes be carried for the summit block even though (in 2010) the register sat below the boulder...

Cheers, Alois.
