37 peaks in 19 days  Sucess!

There was bad weather for weeks in WA so Heather and I drove through OR, CA, NV, UT, and ID. We climbed 37 peaks in 19 days. Mcafee was our 9th day of the trip. Nice peak and hike. We saw horny toads on the way up. trip report

a few things  Sucess!

signing this to note a few things:

- the summit register jar is broken. if anyone is headed up soon (preferably before winter) consider bringing up a replacement (unfortunately i didn't have one handy, though in hindsight a water bottle may have sufficed)
- the turnoff for the CR/Jacks Creek is around 58 miles from Elko...just for consideration when planning travel times
- if you don't have 4WD, you can still take the route described, which works great. if you do want to save maybe a mile or so and don't mind cross countrying, here's an alternative i scoped out on the descent: the big hill (with some small cliff bands) to your right as you ascend the 4WD road is marked Pt. 8546 on topo maps. Before the 4WD turnoff you should have a clear view of it as well as Pt. 7924 to its west. Ascend to the saddle between this two hills, then around some mining dirt tracks circumventing the summit of 8546 (or you can just climb over it) to its north. this will take you to a saddle connecting 8546 to the main ridge crest of McAfee. Follow this to the western slopes of the range, then ascend through open country to the ridge crest and the summit.

Lovely Bristle Cone  Sucess!

Started at the 2wd trailhead, and after hiking up the road for about 0.1 miles I decided to just head straight up the ridge and save the extra mileage and time. Turned out to be a good decision since it started storming pretty much right after I left the peak.

For the 2nd time  Sucess!

Nice hike to enjoy for the 2nd time with Dennis Poulin. That road is not recommended as it is about gone. I think hiking up from Jack Creek Pass may now be the best way to do this one.

Cross country   Sucess!

A neat hike with great weather as a blessing. Ken Jones (from Seattle) and I drove my Tacoma up the rutted road and found a spot to park and made a diagonal ascent up to the peak. Excellent views. Afterwards , we went over and did McCann Creek Peak, getting back to pavement just before dark.

Commanding views  Sucess!

pretty obscure peak but very prominent with good views of the Jarbidge, East Humboldts and Ruby Mountains. Very lonely country. As described, the final section of road has some pretty deep ruts/washouts

McAfee  Sucess!

It was a nice hike, but that washout was a pain in the butt. There were also a lot of mormon crickets.

Fun and scenic  Sucess!

Took the ridge from the north. Great afternoon hike from start to finish with clear wx. The scenic views enroute were punctuated with great views from the summit. Temps dropped to about a pleasant 40F.
