sixsigmafoolRoute Climbed: The Trail Date Climbed: August 4, 2002  Sucess!
I've been trying to summit since Thanksgiving, but every time got lost in the snow. Not today. The trail is clear all the way to the summit, with a few minor patches left in the avalanch chutes. Other than some mud, the trail was in excellent condition, and easy to follow. The weather was mostly cloudy, with poor visibility, and a little rain. Not too much wind, and cool enough to keep it comfortable. Reached the saddle at the summit in just under 3 hours. I believe the stated distance of 5.5 miles, considering how long it takes me to reach Mt. Si. The scramble to the top of the actual Butte was not too bad. It was dry and the wind was only a breeze. Visibility was effectively zero until I was half way down, when the sky started to clear.

5.5 miles one way is what I have seen, but I think it is more like 4.5 miles. Good elevation gain of 3700 feet, with what could be great views at the top, but we were socked in that day. Once at the saddle at the very top we made the ascent up the short rock scramble, which is probably class 2 with some 3 (maybe). The exposure is vry high though, one slip could be fatal with a fall of about 1500 feet. When we did it it was wet, which wasn't too smart, but we felt safe at the time.
