Started climbing from the East following the normal route. Initially walking across steep scree then some gentle scrambles with cables. We reached a point with an almost vertical wall about 30ft with cables on it. Not having harnesses or helmets, and with weather deteriorating (light rain and fog falling) we abandoned the attempt. I will come back and set the record straight!

It was the last climb of our wonderful holiday in Dolomites. If Marmolada is the queen of Dolomites I think that Civetta is almost the princess. We climbed from Refugi Sonino-Coldai across the long ferrata Alleghesi in a very hot day (one of the hottest of all the summer according with the webs) and we needed 6h to reach the summit and we were the second or third group... but all the people climb with patience drinking and drinking in more than 6h!!!! We descended across R.Torrani and "via normale" (it was a long and hard route). Our celebration in the camping at night was superb with good bier.
Good bye Dolomites. We'll back someday. I sure of it.

The list of our climbings (august 2011):
15: Croda Negra / Punta Gallina (2,518m) from Falzarego. It was a rainy day.
16: Piz Boé (3,162m), normal route from P.Pordoi.
17: Tour Trei Cime Lavaredo and Monte Paterno (2,744m) across ferrata.
18: Ra Gusella (2,592m), Nuvolau (2,574m) and Averau (2,649m). The last one across via ferrata.
19: Marmolada (3,342m) across via ferrata and descent across glacier-normal.
20: Grande Cir (2,592m), easy via ferrata.
21: refugi Sonino-Coldai (2,132m), easy walk-up.
22: Civetta (3,220) across ferrata Alleghesi with descent across normal.

23-24: driving to Spain with a big smile (and the smile still stays on)

Walked from Coi to the Refugio Coldai the day before. Was not too busy, and weather was sunny. Descended the Via Normale, which was more arduous than the ascent.

My girlfriend and I stayed in the Rifugio at Passo Staulanza and startet our climp early morning (6 am). From the camp site Palafavera we hiked up to Rifugio coldai and left some of our equipment there and had a small breakfast. Then continued up towards ferrata allenghesi. A fantastic ferrata. quite long actually. Reached the summit in perfect weather conditions. Headed to Rifugio Torrani where we had a cup of soup. It startet to rain and we hurried down via Tivan route and ended back in Rifugio Coldai for the night, All in all from Staulanza-Palafavera-coldai-Summit-Torrani-Coldai - 11 hours - Not crowded at all. Met only 4 climbers the entire day.

Weather was not really perfect, most of the time the peak was in the clouds. Didn't meet anybody on the ascent route. Great climb though, and being just alone out there magniefied the feeling. Descended along the normal route, this was combined scrambling and "skiing" on some snowy sections.

It was near the end of one week's holiday in the Zoldo valley (which I had won in a radio contest!). Because of our hotel we did not want to use Coldai hut and started early after driving to Casera di Pioda - but not early enough: After 45 min we reached Coldai hut, but most climbers who had slept there had already had breakfast and were ahead of us to the starting point of the via ferrata. So we had to wait at the end of the queue. We were in good shape after this week and had done more difficult ferratas. We had to wait often staying behind a group of seniors from Vienna, so it was not very exhausting. But you have to have a good head for heights and some experience in climbing. Weather was fine but not clear. The descent was long, exhausting and more demanding than the ascent. We were happy as we gained the hiking trail on foot of the mountain, though the way back into the valley was still very long
