Boundary to the top route
After bagging Boundary Todd & I undertook the interesting and sometimes tricky scramble to Montgomery. 1+05 over, same back. Surprised to find another ammo box holding a neat summit log book. Not a lot of entries in it for some reason... Very little wind to hinder us on this overcast day. Worth the trip from Boundary Peak provided one has the time. #2 June 20, 2012. Saw summit entry from another salt laker from two days earlier!

Solo from Boundary
The most challenging part is on the NV side. Descended on the south side of the ridge. Lots of loose scree, had to climb at a upward angle just to stay even. I had the summit to myself. Good workout climbing up the scree back to the Boundary and over to the north side and back out. Looks a little intimidating from Boundary, but I'm glad I decided to do it.

We took the south side of the ridge which was a fun challenging traverse. Save some in the tank as you have to go back across and up to Boundary again. Beautiful view even if it was diminshed by the fires down south.

Traverse from Boundary
Fun traverse over from Boundary. You can make it as easy or difficult as you want depending how much you stay on the ridge.

Great mountain, lousy traverse.
The traverse over to Montgomery from Boundary is probably worth it, but you might not think so as you negotiate the loose scree and rotten rock along the way. The view from the summit is sublime, as you will see the Sweetwaters in CA to the NW, the Toiyabes and Toquimas in NV to the NE, the Sierra crest to the West as well as an end view of the White Mountain range to the south of you. I find it hard to believe that so many climb Boundary and then turn around and walk back down, leaving this higher peak unclimbed.

Worth the trip over. Rock wasn't as loose as I expected and definately enjoyed the add-on. Stay close to the ridge on the CA side of the line and you're probably better off.

On a cold and very windy day. I did Boundary solo 4 months earlier, but came back with Daryn to get Montgomery (and Dubois the next day). Montgomery is a much nicer (and less crowded) climb than Boundary. I balked at doing it solo, but it was a lot easier than I had expected. About 2 hours RT from Boundary. Traverse over Boundary
Great weather and views. Busy summit area on Boundary, but I had Montgomery all to myself. It's worth the extra effort. 1.5 hour round trip Boundary to Montgomery and back.

Montgomery was really the highpoint of the trip. Boundary looks fine until you are at the top, and you realize it has a prominence of just 280'. At that point, Montgomery is so compelling...
We were "buzzed" by a glider pilot several times while on the peak.
I loved the primitive camping near the stream at the end of the Trail Canyon Road. Wild horses -- a bit too wild -- provided entertainment. Scree-skiing was great, too.
As usual, I'm signing this log long after the climb, reminded as I troll unrelated pages on summitpost.

This was one of the most obnoxious traverses I have ever done. Not only is it full of loose crap, but on the day I did it there were several inches of new snow covering up much of the route. I felt completely worked, having to save my balance every couple steps, and it took longer to reverse than it did to get over there in the first place, owing to the slowness of the descent from the peak to the saddle. Ugh. I suppse I'm glad I did it, but just barely. And I just barely avoided getting caught in a snow storm.

Dayhike Boundary & Montgomery. Summit register went back to early '70s. Stay on the ridge and off the crappy sand on the way back to Boundary!

Comments on the traverse from Boundary to Montgomery
Most people reach Montgomery as an add-on from the Boundary Peak climb. I found that once you leave the trail, which ends on the summit of Boundary, the difficulty goes up a step. I dropped down to the left (east side) of the ridge and sidehilled down disagreeable scree to the col between the two peaks. Some folks have recommended staying on the ridgeline as much as possible, but that way didn't look too good to me. Once on the Montgomery side, the climbing became an enjoyable scramble. I stayed on the ridgeline with some detours to the left. The summit pinnacle was cool.
Some people say Montgomery Peak overshadows Boundary in both height and ruggedness. I would say you don't really see that effect until you have summitted Montgomery: from Boundary, Montgomery looks like a similarly rugged but slightly higher peak; from Montgomery, on the other hand, Boundary looks like an insignificant scree foresummit.
The Boundary summit register was full of recent entries, including several from the previous day. The Montgomery register, on the other hand, had received no entries in ten days. Pity, as Montgomery is a very worthwhile climb. On the return, I retraced my route down Montgomery and then sidehilled across Boundary to minimize the reclimbing. Elapsed RT time between Boundary and Montgomery for this very average climber, a bit over 3 hours.
Bottom line? I'd definitely recommend doing Montgomery unless you are constrained by lack of time or threatening weather.

The ridge from Boundry Pk to Montgomery was great! But the rest was just scree. It's nice to say I've done it but can't say I'll be doing it again. Thanks for inviting me John.

mpthe traverse from boundary peak was exciting... I made sure to leave my produce in nevada... good views... the snow fell about 24 hours after I left
