The glacier

appears pretty thick, reaching to the top of the moraine at the front.

I wish it were so. You can't see it very well from this angle, but I'd say it's at least twenty vertical meters from the top of the moraine to the ice. If you zoom in on this image, you'll see that the glacier used to be much wider. The moraine to the far right on that picture is the one in the foreground of this picture.

The decline in length is alarming as well. This map shows the position of the tongue of the glacier in subsequent decades. The retreat is dramatic.

It's still a scenic valley though, even with 1.5km of the glacier gone.

I see, quite a lot of change, actually. The aerial view is much more instructive, thanks for posting it.
