South Spur  Sucess!

with 8 other buddies 7 made it + me...

Snow is melting fast, road is dusty and clear, parking lot is busy, trail is dusty at least half up, then snow farily steady but rocks coming out, glissade chutes are still clear but melting fast I wouldn't expect them to be running for much more than another couple weeks at most till those rocks start poking out. Day was not overcast but views totally obscured by hazy smog or perhaps smoke from nearby forest fires (?) only Loo-Wit (St. Helens) came visible towards our descent. Trailhead 5600' up to camp at Goat Flats 9300' (about 4 hours with heavy packs) water running near campsites very convenient started at 5AM made summit 12276' (+2975) in 2-4 hours, glissade chutes not runnable before 9-10AM so don't start too early. About 30 minutes down with glissades then 2 hours down from Lunch Counter. Cute young chickadees working in the restaurant at Trout Lake gas station, food is good place is clean service is slow but girls are cute. Awesome views of mountain over cow fields on road into town. Drove via I5 south then I205 then 84 east exit Hood River brigde toll only 75c no waiting. Less than 5 hours to ranger station sans speeding, could be done quicker, + 30 minutes or so to trailhead.

Mt. Adams - South Spur

After working 24 hours straight and driving 18 hours to the TH slept a few hours and hit the trail. Long slog to the Lunch Counter and then the climb up Piker's Peak- made much harder by windy conditions and stronger gusts. At the top encountered 40+ mile an hour winds and couldn't even stand up. Probably should have tried to fight on, but turned around. Probably the only one to make it this far that day. Only peak not summited during my trip.

Great weather, great mountain!  Sucess!

The weather was good, but the day was long. FZTE and I arrived at the trailhead very late in the evening and we each only got a solid 1h30m of sleep. This made the route more of a grind than it needed to be, but we made it. I was one of the first climbers to reach the summit that day, and FZTE still made the summit despite a lingering stomach ailment that nearly ended his ascent. The glissades down from Pikers Peak were awesome! This was my 24th WA CoHP completed.

Car to Car South Spur via Cold Springs  Sucess!

Due to the crazy weather conditions in the spring, the entire route was still snow-covered. The Wild Waves-like glissade chutes from the false summit all the way to the Lunch Counter were tons of fun.

South Spur  Sucess!

Went up the south spur from Cold Springs. Very hard to find a parking spot if you get there later on a Friday. Snowboarded off the summit. If you want a good ride all the way down bring some cards or something so you can hang out while the snow softens.

Indescribable Environment  Sucess!

Quite the surreal experience my brother and I shared over the course of 24 hours. We climbed the Northwest Ridge with a North Face variation as our finish. Beautiful light the entire time! My TR is here: http://www.summitpost.org/trip-report/639064/Agro-Adams-NWR.html

Conditions  Sucess!

South Climb trailhead is snowed in still. There was a large snow drift blocking the road 2.16 miles (at 4600 ft) before the trailhead. If you can get past that drift (someone tried in their Dodge truck and got stuck as we started) then the road is clear of snow for probably another mile or more. On our way back down from Cold Springs to where all the cars were parked a guy was driving through the drifts with his jacked up Subbie... maybe his tracks made them passable now? LOTS of downed trees on the road within a mile of Cold Springs.

The trail is all snow still. We had zero scree the whole time (nice). However, we were heading back down in the afternoon and were post holing like crazy. Makes for slow going. Recommend skiing/boarding down.

Re: Conditions

What time of day did you decend? We are climbing on the 5th and the 6th. (next week) Do you think we could avoid postholing with an earlier start? Thanks in advance.

How is it?

Anyone climb via the South Spur in the last week or so? Curious how the road into the trailhead and mountain conditions are.

Winter Mount Adams  Sucess!

Tough, tough approach. You can only get about 3 miles up the 8040 road right now. Then we snowshoed from there up to about 7,300'. That was a long slog in deep snow. Woke up the next day and went for the summit. The snow is packed and icy about 7000',

Only Once, long ago  Sucess!

My only summit of Adams was with the Obsidians group out of Eugene, via the south spur. Nice climb, nice day, wasn't in very good shape back then.
