New Altitude record  Sucess!

This was my first Sierra peak and the highest mountain I ever climbed until I did Whitney the next year. Ascended from Bishop Pass up the western slopes, and ran into some mild altitude sickness near the summit, but still made it and was enthralled by the spectacular views! Great introduction to the High Sierra.

Perfect day hike. Left South Lake about 5 am. About 13 hours round trip. Ascended one of the west side chutes from Bishop Pass.

West slope  Sucess!

Nice stable boulders and a great view of the Palisades. Best of all, the current summit register had cute kitties on the cover, and someone's grocery list on the inside. 2h20 from South Lake.

Southeast Slope Solo  Sucess!

Climbed one of the steep chutes above the glacier. Lots of loose junk, but worth the effort for the view.

From South Lake  Sucess!

Solo dayhike from South Lake. Felix felt ill, stayed back. Left at 6am. Got to base of mtn at 8am, summit by 11am, down to base of mtn at 1230pm and finally back to TH at 230pm, drove to Tahoe afterwards. 2000ft of scrambling was intense without gloves. My hands hurting for days afterwards. Fun.

NW Slope - solo  Sucess!

Fun day climb from South Lake. Tried to keep it class 3 staying to the right of the class 2 chute...it looked like a lot of loose junk in there. Fun scramble. The views alone make this a worthy climb.

Brother got spooked!

Went up with my brother up from Bishop Pass, not realizing he'd never been on a serious talus slope before. He got spooked at about 13K' so we turned around.

West Slope Ascent from Bishop Pass  Sucess!

Really nice overnight outing camping at Bishop Lake. On the trail by 5 am made for a mid morning summit. Fantastic 360 view but especially of the Palisade Crest.
Down climbing was a bit of a drag with the vast number of moving boulders. Got my foot stuck under one that rolled on top of it and needed help lifting the boulder off.

Greenhorn backpacker  Sucess!

Felt like I was haulin' the kitchen sink, all the way to Bishop Lakes. Bears were maulin' my cannister of stone cold bananas in fitful dreams all night long as the lake froze up. At the top of the clear cold next morning effort the pencil slipped through my hand and fell through the summit rocks after fumbling to sign the register. Tossing and turning my pack all the way back to South Lake, to slam it down next to the van!

bp  Sucess!

I think the palisades is the grandest part of the sierra - the climb up from bishop pass was steep, but enjoyable - I think the descent involved a smokey cave - cody made it most of the way

agassiz  Sucess!

I was expecting loose, but instead find nice talus field. It's steep, but stays mostly class 2.

Unusual routes  Sucess!

Holiday in US.
From South Lake to Bishop Pass, then I traversed to the South Side and ascended via a very fine gully (lots of sand inside, but good rocks - brighter and more solid than the other parts - and some nice climbing passages) to the southern summit and then to the top. Descend: I missed the normal route :-) and followed a steep gully full of rubble to the right. Very fine route up and bad route down! Very stormy day, due to the strong flurries the last 200m were mostly crawling than walking.

chute on w side  Sucess!

Talus was solid (unlike the normal route) and the slab section at the top of the chute was fun. Climbed with loaner dog Jasmine. Had to push her up a few Class 4 spots. Views of the Palisades were spectacular.
