Great peak  Sucess!

It was rainy on the west side but on the east side it was great. Great hike with BikeJr

Really terribly hot  Sucess!

Great views fro the top, but I started sufferin from heat exhaustion on the way down. Luckily I had grabbed some snow to put in my water bottle to use as an ice pack.

Finally, Too.  Sucess!

Gimpilator and I had wanted to summit this peak for a long time. Our party was Gimpilator, his friend Greg, and I. We had fairly consistent Autumn snow above 6900', enough to enhance the scenery but not enough to impede our progress. We then summited nearby Nelson Ridge.

WOW!  Sucess!

I did this one on Labor Day 2011 and I was very impressed. Aside from one guy I saw coming down the trail as I was nearing the summit, I had the trail to myself the whole day. It was a beautiful day without a cloud in the sky and the views starting from 1/2 way up were amazing. Once you get to and over Nelson Ridge, the views are even better! I was a little dissappointed with the "scramble" to the summit. I took the south face up and most of the route was loose talus. The west ridge on the way down was much better. I hit up the high points on Nelson rigde to the south and the north on the way back too. Anyway, this has to be one of my favorite mountains in Washington. Great scenery.

Fan-frickin-tastic  Sucess!

I saw only 4 NFS trail crew members low on the Mt Aix trail the entire day. Other than that I had the whole mountain to myself on a hot, cloudless Monday afternoon. I ended up solo climbing the West ridge to the summit (unbeknownst to me there is a trail up the east side). The climb was difficult class 3 only in terms of the massive amount of loose rock on the ridge. Basically just follow the path of least resistance up the ridge to the summit. If traveling with others I strongly recommend bringing a helmet due to rockfall hazard.

Great Peak!  Sucess!

Climbed the south side and spent the night on the summit. Spectacular sunset and sunrise, and the mountain goats kept me company.

Favorite Mountain  Sucess!

Favorite mountain of all. Used to climb it every year. Survived the worst lightning storm to hit south-central Washington in the last 15+ years while camped out on the summit in August of 1999 (well camped against the retaining wall just below summit, but still pretty hairy). Got engaged in Sept. 2006 at sunrise after a night of watching the northern lights on the summit.

Standard route  Sucess!

Got an early start and beat the heat up to the ridge, where the amazing views of Adams, the Goat Rocks, Helens, & Rainier started! First time in this area and I will definitely be coming back!

Ice Axe on Aix  Sucess!

Great snow and great weather. All snow above ~4500 feet. A sign near Bumping Lake said the road was closed. I'm not sure what that sign was for

Not so bad.  Sucess!

Not as tough/draining as I anticipated. Perhaps the fall like weather contributed. No volcano views this day but plenty of views of nearby/lower peaks.

Mt. Aix  Sucess!

Ascended via the Mt. Aix trail. Ridge was snowcovered for about the last thousand feet but clear to the summit. Terrific 360-degree views from the top! The summit register is in need of replacement.

Talk about a view  Sucess!

Awesome climb. Stayed up alone on the snow, and went up to the summit in the morning. It was steep without a trail being one of the first up in a long time. Definitely one of the coolest spots to stay that time of year because of the amazing view of the sunset behind rainier and on the surrounding peaks.

Aix August 08  Sucess!

Camped at trailhead and departed at 7:30 AM. Nice to be at it early on this clear day because the switchbacks are in the shade at that hour: 2 hours of cool climbing. We took many breaks and reached the Nelson Ridge trail intersection at about 10:40. Went the long way to the summit and it does add quite a bit of distance. Had our black lab with us so I thought I'd be conservative. If we go back I'll try the direct route. Light winds and SUNNY on the summit.... swarmed by flies, bees and butterflies.

Downhill was painful of course... made it from summit to car in 2:45. Counted 35 switchbacks. Great trip.
