Southern route via Panagia chapel  Sucess!

Perfect day for the Holy Mountain climb though the night before at thousand year old Megisti Lavra monastery was just sleepless due to one Romanian guy snoring like a bulldozer... Beautiful forest hike across southern slopes of Athos mountain at the very end of the peninsula, long distance and huge altitude difference between trailhead and the summit. Amazing views from the top, still partly covered with snow with neverending waters around, Chalkidiki coasts and just too impressively looking strip of land of Athos peninsula with forest mountains, both coastlines with monasteries till the horizon... fiary tale evening atmosphere in the descent, bivouacing in the forest above Stavros trail junction, spring symphony of birds singing... Amazing place.

Route Climbed: Normal route  Sucess!

We started the trip at 10 am and reached the peak at 4 pm. The route was not easy to go due to a lot of snow above "Panagia". Nevertheless we had a beautiful weather and we spent one night at the peak of Mount Athos. Great Trip!

John: Thank you for supporting us.

Route Climbed: Normal route south slope Date Climbed: 4-Nov-2003  Sucess!

Mountain Athos is a great mountain, is called Holy mountain by the locals. I climbed from the south slopes (normal route) and we did it in two days. The light time in November is small, such we decide to camp in Stavros area at the altitude of 700m. To avoid campnig you should saty is Skiti Agias Annas which is lower and summit Athos in one day.

A lot of climber are prefer to camp on the summit into the small church of Profitis Ilias.

Just before 13:00 I arrived to the chapel which crowns the top of Athos. There is some snow here and there on the top. Misty weather, but just not white out. I can see the whole peninsula, but a pitty that the views are less good than promissed. It is cold so I have jacket, gloves and headpet on.
