Dayhike NW slope via Sphinx Creek   Sucess!

Long dayhike. The concept of possibly tagging additional summits was dashed by the altitude really slowing me down. Next time I'll try to hit this area better adjusted.

Part of a loop  Sucess!

Did this as a 3 day trip. Camped at Sphinx Lakes on Day 1, summited via NW slopes on Day 2. Took a class 3 route to the left of the snow covered center of the slope (scary with a backpack). Descended the South slope and went over Longley Pass.

My first Cl 3 peak!

Northwest Slope  Sucess!

Climbed the Northwest Slope with Jessica and Tammy, staying left of the snow, from our camp at the third Sphinx Lake on day three of a four day backpack trip. Loose rock was a little unnerving. Spectacular views from the summit!

From North Guard  Sucess!

An east cruise up the north slopes from North Guard. Nothing too tricky about the route and amazing views from the top!

East Ridge  Sucess!

First of three this day including South Guard and Thunder from base camp at East Lake. The East Ridge is the way to climb this peak. Summited the center pinnacle (easy cl.3) because it's the "coolest". With Tommey Jo and Wes Tanner. Pictures and story

2x  Sucess!

Quick side trip on the way back to camp below the southwest ridge by the lakes after North Guard. Then off to South Guard and a long weekend on the Great Western Divide.

First climbed in August 2008... up from camp at Sphinx Lakes on Labor Day weekend. Summit block easier than anticipated, I think not really class 4.

Dayhike from Onion Valley  Sucess!

Absolutely grueling day! Left Onion Valley at midnight, returned 23.5 hours later. The return hike back over Kearsarge Pass was brutal. It was an absolutely gorgeous hike, though. Took a much better route back to East Lake (instead of going between the two creeks, we stayed to the North. Terrain was super mellow and less brushy.

Sphinx Lakes

Up to North Guard Ridge, then realized I should have decended moderately from Sphinx Pass to circumvent ridge. Will summit next time!

Brewer - North Guard Dayhike  Sucess!

Started at 2:30am from Roads End and made it to the summit of Brewer via Sphinx Col in a little more than 8 hours. I could not find the register and spent some time searching and also climbed the pinnacle which I believe is the true highpoint. Then climbed North Guard and returned to Roads End at 7:30pm making for a long 17 hour day.

East Ridge/Sphinx Lakes loop, day hike, July 2004  Sucess!

Always meant to write a TR for this hike but never got around to it; here's the summary version;
Left roads end at 4
East Lake by 8 - broke/dislocated a finger while getting water
Summit around 2 – kinda slow because of pain, surprised to meet a nice couple on summit, blew off plans to do North Guard and headed out via Sphinx Lakes
Picked up the Sphinx Creek Trail around 9, just after dark. Back to trailhead after midnight, but my ride (wife) had left two hours earlier. Hiked six more miles down the road back to camp at Cedar Grove. Ended up being a 32+ mile day hike

Route Climbed: South Slope  Sucess!

Not that I think it too likely, but if you are approaching Brewer from the Roaring River area don't try to take the Brewer Creek drainage up from where it meets RR. It was a big pain due to steep loose dirt and rocks.
The summit on the other hand was fantastic. The climbing was okay but the view was great.

Leucid - Jul 21, 2012 10:52 am

From Roaring River

Brewer Creek Drainage is a nice approach from the Roaring River area if you hike up to Moraine Ridge on the trail first, instead of trying to scramble up from the bottom of Cloud Canyon.
